Profile

Daughter of August Wu of the Coral Shore, the magical guardian of Hong Kong, and Detective Sergeant Adam Gulliver, Alice had a fairly normal childhood for a Hong Kong teen. Contrary to her mother's wishes, however, she set her sights on joining the police to follow in her father's foosteps rather than going into business like her grandmother as her mother desired.

Tragedy struck the family when Alice was 16. Her mother, investigating the arrival of a demonic entity in Hong Kong, was killed by said entity. In her last act she passed her magical powers on to Alice who woke up from a nightmare with red hair instead of her former dark brown as the first sign of her mother's death.

Alice continued in her goal of becoming a police officer, but incorporated her mother's magical role into her life as the magical guardian of Hong Kong, simplifying her mother's grandiloquent title down to The Wu. To keep her magic low-key and invisible, she doesn't use her magic directly. She instead imbues her weapons and equipment with charms, hexes, and spells invisible to normal eyes.

Description:

Tall, slim, short-haired, exotic. That's how Alice Gulliver would be described ... in Hong Kong. There she's taller than average and her naturally red hair stands out as unusual, along with her face that has the harsher, angular features of the Han smoothed and rounded out by her Caucasian ancestry.

Of course in North America she's dead-average in height, albeit unusually slim. Her red hair doesn't stand out unless her ethnicity is noted. Even with that, however, mixed ancestry is commonplace; she's noteworthy but not "exotic" or "strange" or any of the other terms used to describe her in her native Hong Kong.

What she is, though, is wiry. She may be small but her body packs cables of muscle. Slim-hipped, short-haired, and small-breasted, she could easily be mistaken for a teenaged boy in poor lighting. Her mode of dress, favouring jeans, a functional blouse that looks more like men's work clothing, and a black leather vest, add to the illusion unless the plain black, short-heeled pumps are noted.

Of course what's likely to be noted first is the harness over her shoulders holding two handguns, one under each arm.

History:

Alice Gulliver is the daughter of August Wu of the Coral Show, deceased magical guardian of Hong Kong, and Detective Sergean Adam Gulliver of the Hong Kong Police. Eschewing a stable career as a businesswoman like her grandmother, her mother's wish, she decided instead to pursue her dream of being a cop like her father. As a teen, while pursuing that dream, her mother was killed by a demon attacking Hong Kong. Alice woke up from a nightmare with her hair changed from her rather ordinary dark brown to shocking red, the same colour as her mother's.

Alice continued her course and eventually became a police detective. Her mother's death transferred the August Wu's magical powers down the line to Alice; magical abilities that Alice uses to her advantage both as a cop and as the new mystical defender of Hong Kong. Alice now dispenses justice, both mundane and magical, under a shortened version of her mother's grandiloquent title: The Wu.

Recently Alice has joined an "Asian Crime" task force and is seconded and deputized within the Gotham City Police Department as several jurisdictions work together to take on a Triad operating across mainland China, through Hong Kong and deep in the heart of several American cities. She has both a Hong Kong badge and a Gotham City badge as a result, despite being a Chinese citizen of Hong Kong.

Personality:

Alice is brave (due partially to an ingrained Buddhist/stoic fatalism), observant (of matters both mundane and mystical), and determined (or should one say "stubborn"?). She will not back down from what's right simply because she might get hurt; she thinks getting hurt is inevitable in her role so she might as well do right by it. She will not be fooled again by the nature of the world around her after she found out what her mother really is. She will not be coerced into doing things differently than she's decided to do them (although she can be persuaded).

Abilities

Magic:
As The Wu, the magical guardian of Hong Kong, Alice inherited the magical affinity of her mother. She has chosen, however, to go low-key with her magic and does not cast spells directly (although there is nothing stopping her from learning to if she needs it). Alice's magic consists instead of enchanting her weapons and other equipment with hexes and spells that are invisible to mortal eyes. This permits her to use, say, her handcuffs to make a violent suspect calm and docile when she activates them. Or it makes some of her bullets, say, tools to dispel demons possessing a target. She has a very large arsenal of such pre-enchanted tools and spends a large chunk of her time maintaining and expanding that.

Perception:
Alice has excellent sensory (and extrasensory) perceptive ability, an ability that serves her well as an investigator and enforcer in matters both mundane and magical.

Physique:

Alice is stronger than she looks, although by no means super-strong. She is also very agile and graceful, able to jump and dodge and generally move her body well.

Occult:
Alice has had to learn a lot about the world of the occult. What she doesn't immediately know about demons, ghosts, monsters, and magicians she knows where to look up. In her home she has a respectable library of mystical tomes, as well as a rather complete grimoire of charms and hexes she puts to practical use.

Policework:

Alice is a trained police officer who excelled in the academy and in her detective training. She is adept at hand-to-hand combat and very adept with firearms. She has a decent grasp of street tactics and is a whiz at filling out paperwork at need. She is also a crime scene investigator without par.

Contacts:
Through her mother, Alice has some reputation in the mystical world and can, in case of extreme emergencies, call upon higher-calibre magical backup. Through her father she has connections up the Hong Kong police and via that some limited connections in various police forces in the USA as part of her "Asian Crimes" task force position.

Ingredients:
Alice has in her apartment an old-school apothecary that would give practicing Wiccans a joygasm if they could have five minutes' access to it. Which they won't get because she needs the ingredients to make her tools

Library:
Alice is always looking out for and purchasing books of arcane lore to help her in her role of defending humanity from the demonic and monstrous.

Money:

Monetarily Alice lives rather frugally because her library of occult lore and her magical ingredients for spells and hexes take a sizable chunk of her salary.

Detachment:
Her mother's shocking death at the hands of a demon damaged Alice as a teen and that scar tissue remains. Yes, she views herself as a defender of humanity from threats both temporal and mystical, but ... she really doesn't feel herself as much of a part of humanity. She feels herself as belonging on the outside looking in, being part of things only insofar as it relates to her role.

Social Attachments:
For someone who doesn't feel herself as part of humanity, it is actually amazing how many people she views as "family". There's not much of her literal family left: her grandmother (Madam Lan, a Hong Kong businesswoman close to retirement) and her grandmother is about all she has left. On the other hand, she forms unusually close attachments to people like her barber (actually her father's barber from Hong Kong, long since retired, but who still cuts her hair for old time's sake), the grocer she frequents most often, that guy at the newsstand around the corner, the poor drug addicted girl who lives downstairs that she helped out of a jam once, her partner, etc.

Stubborn:

Determined, yes. Stubborn, oh God yes. Alice is like a mule and will actively resist any attempt to force her into anything, even if it's good for her. "You really need to see a doctor." "Go away, I'm fine!" That level of stubbornness.
