Profile
Colette is a regular girl who dreams of being a singer. She's also the current host of an ancient alien intelligence that hopes that one day she will prove worthy of it's legacy -- and become the latest of many incarnations of the hero "Starstrider". Until such a time as she proves worthy, if ever, it grants her a fraction of its powers as superheroine-in-training "Stardust". This however is not necessarily the destiny she is interested in choosing for herself

Description
History
History - Colette
The daughter of a French diplomat and an American businessman, Nicolette Caron was born in the US, spent the first decade of her life shuttling between the two countries, before finally settling for good in Manhattan. She has a brother, Lucas, who's four years older and now a junior partner in a Manhattan law firm. She grew up in the shadow of her over-achieving brother, and though she's pretty smart, she has never really tried hard for anything, and her academic performance was distinctly average.
Since leaving high-school, Colette has moved into a tiny but comfortable Manhattan apartment, and is pursuing her dream of becoming a famous singer. She's doing this by (a bit patchily) attending college to study music, and uploading songs to her stream, when she gets around to it (rarely).
Colette's life took a turn for the strange a few months after leaving home, when she started hearing voices in her head, that told her to be a superhero. Unusually, the voices proved they were real by granting her superpowers. Colette is so far unconvinced.
History - Starstrider
The first Starstrider, inventor of the Starstrider Complexus that empowered him, died millennia ago. Since then, the Starstrider Complexus has inhabited countless hosts in several galaxies, seeking worthy successors. Few make the cut. Sometimes centuries pass without a Starstrider; the Complexus is infinitely patient, and very choosy. A fully-empowered Starstrider is a cosmic-level superhero, and the Complexus will not risk those powers in the wrong hands.
The last Starstrider was Cpt.James Ash, an Australian pilot who died in 1962. It has taken until now for the Complexus to find a compatible host in Colette, and it's dubious about her potential. Via the archived personality of Ash as an interface to her mind, the Complexus grants her a very limited set of the Starstrider powers, to test and train her. Thus Colette has become not the new Starstrider, but the junior version, Stardust. In time, if she proves truly worthy, then maybe she will become the next Starstrider.
Personality
Colette
Colette is a bundle of energy and a social butterfly. She tends to see everyone as a potential friend until proven otherwise, and is chatty enough to talk the ears of a herd of elephants. Although actually quite smart, she has the concentration span of a butterfly, and an almost pathological inability to take anything seriously.
It would be wrong to call Colette vacuous, but she can do a good imitation. She's often pretty shallow and jokes continually, but there are hidden depths when she remembers to focus.
Starstrider
The Starstrider Complexus is a very alien mentality. It talks to Colette in her head, via the archived personality of former Starstrider host Captain James Ash, Australian ex WW2 pilot. He was considered a suitable internal mentor, being human, but there's a major personality clash. Ash is serious, gruff, and old-fashioned, and Colette's frivolity grates badly. With his 50's mindset, he believes "A girl has no place putting herself in the line of fire," an attitude Colette deems moronic. The conversations in Colette's head are usually full-on arguments.
Abilities
1. OVERVIEW
All of Colette's powers are granted to her by the Starstrider Complexus, a conscious techno-sorcerous symbiont that stores within it the memories of all former Starstrider hosts. Interfacing magic with the weirder realms of quantum mechanics, the Starstrider powers manipulate matter and energy on a sub-atomic scale. The full Starstrider powers would make for a formidable hero indeed, but as Colette gets only a fraction of them, it's not important to outline them.
All of Colette's powers as Stardust are essentially small aspects of the Starstrider power that are granted to help her prove herself. Thus she flies, or is supernaturally strong, because the Starstrider Complexus manipulates energy and matter around her to simulate that effect.
Colette is unaware of the full extent of the Starstrider powers, and the Complexus will go to considerable lengths to keep it that way.
2. SUPER-DURABILITY
The strongest power Colette is granted is her extreme durability. The Starstrider views her as a learner, and wants to keep her safe above all. As a result she isn't far off invulnerable to physical harm, though not without cost. She is momentarily frozen in time to resist damage, and while this isn't noticeable at the lower-end of the scale, surviving massive damage may render her frozen for long periods of time.
The Starstrider will protect her from hostile environments, but doesn't want to make things easy for her. It can for example provide air underwater or even protect against the vacuum of space, but it doesn't want her to get complacent, so will let her suffer a bit first.
3. ENHANCED STRENGTH
Colette has enhanced strength far above normal for someone of her size, but at the bottom end of super-powered strength. The Starstrider Ash personality thinks it's a bit unseemly for her to be too strong and so keeps this on a tight reign. She could only punch a hole in a wall if she had time to stand there punching it repeatedly until it broke, but Starstrider would quietly up her strength a notch if she was trying to raise a small car off an injured person. It won't grant her enough extra strength that she'd suspect it was holding out on her though.
4. FLIGHT
Colette can fly. However the Starstrider Ash persona doesn't approve of her going fast (as the persona of a man from a more sexist era, it's pretty dubious about women drivers even), so normally limits her to around 40mph. It has told her she's not capable of handling the power to go faster, but that it might be able to channel more energy for flight in extreme circumstances. This is the one area Colette really understands she's being held back, and it's a major source of contention. Colette thinks being able to fly really really fast would be cool, which of course makes the Starstrider persona more determined that she can't be trusted with speed.
5. MATTER MANIPULATION
The wellspring of Starstrider's powers, Colette gets very much the short end of the stick with this. The story she has been told is that this is a power the Starstrider can do through her, but she can't control herself. This is done so sparingly she is utterly unaware of how potent this could theoretically be, and knows of only two ways it can manifest.
1. Instant costume. Starstrider can convert her clothes into a Stardust costume. Another source of contention, Colette thinks the Ash persona is a horrible fashion designer, and bickers with it over how the costume should look. She also finds it suspicious that it claims to be incapable of upgrading her civilian wardrobe.
2.Heat generation. She can generate heat under her hands, but at a slow rate that makes it virtually useless offensively. She can burn a hole through steel eventually, but she could probably get through quicker with an oxyacetylene cutter.
6. DEUS EX
Starstrider has much greater power than it grants to Colette as Stardust, though she doesn't know it. Nor does she know that the Starstrider is capable of acting through her, without her knowledge.
Skills
SINGING AND MUSIC
Colette plays keyboards competently, guitar a bit better, but neither exceptionally well. She is however a extremely good singer, which is lucky as it's about the only thing she's really good at. While still a bit untrained and prone to being over-breathy, she has a rare ability to sing softly but with considerable power and control.
Resources
INTERNAL MENTOR
He may be a huge pain in her ass, but the Ash persona in her head can also be useful. He had a couple of decades experience of being a superhero as the last Starstrider, (though mostly not on Earth), and shares some of the experience of prior Starstriders too. However he cannot see directly through her senses without her concentrating on sending him an image. Unless she knows to ask the right questions, she won't get the right answers.
THE ARCHIVE
The Starstrider Complexus stores the memories and personalities of former Starstrider hosts in a kind of psychic VR world, the Archive.
Her main conduit to the Archive is the Captain Ash persona, though she is able to go into a trance and enter the Archive herself too. It's a confusing and alien place so the Ash persona is by far her best bet for getting anything useful from the Archive. However, Ash is very over-protective and prone to believing there's a lot she doesn't need to know.
TRUST FUND KID
Weaknesses
BEHIND MY BACK!
As Stardust, Colette does not actually control her powers; the Starstrider Complexus does. The powers she has will scale according to need, and it's Starstrider, not her, who determines need. She will not be able to use her powers for purposes the Starstrider doesn't approve of.
The Starstrider is capable of temporarily taking over, and speaking or acting through her, without her awareness. It would do this sparingly and reluctantly, but this has the potential to put her in dangerous or difficult situations, and act against her interests.
MORE PARTS TO BREAK
The Starstrider Complexus that grants Colette powers functions by manipulating both quantum interference technology and magic, and encompasses a psychic component. With these three factors so intertwined, there are more ways to detect, or interfere with it.
OLD ENEMIES
Starstrider has been active for millennia, in many guises. Colette has only been in the biz a short time, but anything that reveals what she's host to could mean she suddenly inherits enemies on dozens of different worlds.
OOH, SHINY!
Colette is not good at focus. She has a butterfly mind that flutters randomly. To say she's easily distracted would be an understatement. If she witnessed an alien invasion, then left to her own devices there's a real danger she'd decide to tweet it before flying off into battle, and then get sidelined into an online flame-war while the aliens took over.
PSYCHIC BEACON
The Starstrider Complexus contains the archived personas of a hundred prior Starstriders, of dozens of different alien races. This gives Colette an extremely weird mental footprint, and any psychic sensitive will immediately know there is something very unusual about her.
RECKLESS
Colette rarely takes anything seriously, and life is a bit of a game to her. This has become even worse since she's become near-invulnerable. Colette is not good at thinking before she acts, or speaks.
RELUCTANT HERO
Although she's a very moral person, Colette isn't entirely convinced it's her job to do something about the injustices of the world. She never asked for Great Power, so how's it fair to insist she has Great Responsibilities?
Starstrider has convinced her enough to give Superheroing a bit of a test-run. She can't just stand by if people are getting hurt after all. However it's something she considers a distraction from her life rather than a true cause, and will find excuses not to get involved unless given encouragement.
VOICES IN MY HEAD
Colette is in almost constant mental communication with the Ash persona of the Starstrider Complexus. They are not good friends, and have very different aims and world-views. In short, they argue a lot, and neither really trusts the other.
