Profile

A mild-mannered therapist who one day realized he had telekinesis and could create force fields, Rowan Saunders has kept his ability largely to himself as he struggles to have a normal life. Still, he feels the weight of responsibility to use his talents for the good of others. Surely there are better heroes out there, though. Surely the world doesn't need him. Does it? Part of him wants adventure and to fight for justice, but part of him wants to help people in a more conventional way, the way he was trained for. He's a therapist, and a good one. Why can't that be enough?

He stands about 5'10" with a fit build. Light brown hair crowns his head, short on the sides and left long on top in thick waves. He's got an easy smile that dimples his cheeks, and his eyes are a bright, lively blue, though sometimes obscured behind black-rimmed glasses. He usually dresses fairly conservatively and nondescript, though sometimes his youthfulness and energy break through the monotony and set him apart from the crowd.

History

Rowan was born and raised in Brooklyn. He went to school at Columbia University. As an undergrad, he studied for a year in Austria, and he had a chance to travel all over Europe. He came back to Brooklyn, though, and there he remains. He's unmarried, and he has two siblings, a brother and a sister. The whole family still lives nearby, though he doesn't see them as often as he should.

When he was fourteen, he was walking on the street and a bus came hurtling toward him. He didn't think, he just reacted. A forcefield sprang into being around him, and the bus practically bounced off him. No one was hurt, thankfully, and Rowan ran all the way home before anyone could question him. His parents offered to get him help, maybe try to find some program for mutant kids or something, but Rowan wanted nothing to do with it. He just wanted to try to live a normal life.

And so he does, for the most part. He played with his powers in private, cultivated them over the years, but he keeps that part of his life quite private. Lately, though, it has been weighing on him that he could be doing so much good in the world using his powers rather than hiding them. He already volunteers at soup kitchens and offers free counseling to the homeless, but he could do more. So once in awhile he patrols the streets, staying to the shadows, and he looks for crime to stop. He's thwarted a few petty criminals, but so far nothing too impressive.

Personality

Rowan's got a good heart. Ever since he was a kid, he wanted to help people. His parents instilled a sense of civic duty in him, and he remembers many Thanksgivings and Christmases in soup kitchens, feeding the less fortunate as a family. When he realized he could create force fields and do telekinesis, his first thoughts were of how he could use these abilities toward the greater good.

FORCE FIELDS
Rowan can summon transparent force fields at will and surround either himself or other people/objects with them. They don't have to surround people/objects wholly, but they can. He can project them out as far as 100 feet. They can bear the brunt of high impact, bullets, and other objects of a weight up to and including a semi truck. Anything heavier than that, and the force fields start to fail. Sound can penetrate the forcefields, though it's muffled. Air cannot penetrate the force fields, so they contain a limited oxygen supply if one is fully surrounded. He can dispel them at will.

TELEKINESIS

Rowan can move objects with his mind, up to and including the weight of a semi truck, all within a range of 100 feet. The smaller the object, the more easily he can manipulate it. While he can manipulate multiple objects, he can only manipulate a semi truck's weight's worth total. The more he tries to do different things with different objects, the more concentration he requires and the more energy it saps from him. He can lift things as high as a hundred feet and throw them at a speed of 50 mph.

Rowan speaks German, French, Spanish, and Italian with a decent degree of fluency.

It's a hobby that Rowan's pretty serious about. He has state of the art equipment and likes to capture still life images of life in New York City.

Rowan is a licensed therapist, and he knows the ins and outs of fixing the unsettled mind. He's a good listener, a thoughtful speaker, and he has a general knowledge of various mental illnesses and disorders.

PARENTS
If times get tough, Rowan can always move back in with his parents. He'd rather not, but they're there if he needs them, and if he finds himself in dire financial straights, chances are they'll bail him out.

WORK

Despite his clients being largely low-income/no-income, Rowan makes enough money to afford an apartment in Brooklyn, his photography hobby, and general living expenses. He's not rich, but he's not hurting, either.

CONCENTRATION
It requires concentration for Rowan to use his powers, and the more he uses them, the more concentration they require. The heavier the objects he's manipulating or fending off with his force fields, the harder he has to concentrate. The more he has to concentrate, the less he can do side tasks or carry on conversations. If his concentration breaks, his powers are disrupted. Whatever he's manipulating once more belongs to gravity, and his force fields buckle and collapse.

CONNECTIONS
Rowan has family in Brooklyn, and if they're compromised, he's compromised. It's why he keeps his powers secret as best he can, and only goes seeking crime to fight in the dead of night, in areas where he won't be recognized. He wants to keep his family safe from retaliation, and that holds him back.

WEARINESS

Using his abilities takes a lot out of Rowan. He gets tired if he pushes himself too hard, and if he overdoes it, he collapses in exhaustion. The only real fix is rest until he's got his energy back.
