History
History:
By the time Augustus was 16, some of his friends were starting to die from overdoses, suicide or gang fights. He was one of the lucky ones who survived and did not drop out. He started tattooing after high school, but could not escape the violence where he lived. Friends, chance and survival led him further and further into a largely Italian street gang that dealt mainly in car theft, chop shops, fencing, prostitution and hard drugs. Augustus was an alcoholic and weed addict by 18.
In an especially bad fight against a rival gang with several mutants, Augustus' own mutation manifested. He neutralized the powers of the mutants and one of them was stomped to death by Augustus' friends. The story of Augustus' abilities spread quickly and soon he came to the attention of The Detroit Partnership (Zerilli crime family). They paid Augustus well to even the playing field against rivals with mutants or metahumans, and provided him with the protection he needed to open and run his tattoo shop. Augustus looked at it as a matter of survival, knowing he could not say no to the Detroit Partnership. But as the jobs got more and more violent, and further and further outside Detroit, he loathed himself.
Augustus fell down a hole of hard drugs and alcohol, and was soon too unstable to be useful to his patrons. Angered, they sent him a very clear message in the form of a beating that nearly killed him. He managed to kick the hard drugs and slow his drinking down to merely unhealthy levels. Augustus was always a street level gang member though, not wanted or trusted to get ahead in the Detroit Partnership. He stuck with his friends, even as their numbers dwindled over the years because of the lives they led.
In early 2027, Augustus was 'traded' to the Genovese crime family in New York. New York's concentration of mutants and metahumans on the right and wrong sides of the law were an eye-opener for Augustus, as was the level of violence. Before long, he started making plans to leave the mob behind and start a new life.
Personality
Personality:
If it comes down to getting violent to defend himself, his own, save face, or survival he will do so without compunction and guilt. Long, hard experience has beat the compassion out of him when it comes to living the way he has had to.
Abilities
Beserker:
Like so many traumatized street fighters, Augustus reaches blackout in severe fights. Once he hits that point, he is not aware of his own or anyone else's state until he is disabled or his opponent is. Only once he cannot fight or his opponent cannot fight will he come out of the blackout and be faced with the physical and other consequences of the fight. Practically speaking, once he loses it, Augustus will ignore injuries that do not disable him, even if it may cause him further injury or death. He simply does not feel them while blacked out.
Disruption Pulse:
The pulse cannot disrupt indirect effects of power usage. The pulse could take away a telekinetic's ability to lift objects, but if an object has already been thrown, the pulse will not suddenly stop it. The same goes for energy blasts or other secondary effects already 'in flight'.
Augustus' ability requires conscious control. It will not trigger reactively against powers or attacks he does not know are coming.
Like any other, this power requires PC approval for use against PC's. It requires scene-runner approval for use against NPCs or TPCs. Abuse of this power may result in player discipline. Play nice.
Skills
Artist:
Augustus has excellent drawing skills in traditional and digital media. He is self-taught and has a great deal of intuitive rather than explicit knowledge of what he does. He is capable of professional quality work.
Driving:
Augustus can drive automatic, standard, motorcycles and forklifts. He is licensed to drive cars and motorcycles.
Firearms:
Augustus is capable of using basic firearms. He has used pistols, rifles and automatic rifles. His marksmanship is average at best.
Musician:
Augustus is a singer and guitar player of sub-professional ability. He knows a wide range of popular songs from the past and present.
Street Fighting:
Augustus grew up fighting in the streets with friends and rivals. He is brutal, graceless, aggressive and effective. He is quite capable of using basic weapons such as knives or improvised clubs.
Tattooing:
Resources
Cash:
Augustus has about $50,000 in cash.
Contacts:
Augustus has not been in New York long enough to develop deep contacts, but he knows some people. Some friends of his or people he has met over the years are doing jobs of various levels of legality and he knows quite a few tattoo artists from conventions and the like. He has some ability to use the contacts for information or introductions.
Tools:
Pulse has a glock and a couple of knives he carries with him.
Wheels:
Weaknesses
Blackouts:
Augustus blacks out in serious fights. When he reaches that point, he is no longer in conscious control. He will fight to the total disabling of his opponent or incapacitation of himself, with no concern for how injured he is or whether he kills the other person. Anyone intervening becomes a target as well. Augustus cannot pull himself out of a black out by force of will, it is a deeply entrenched feature of long, violence induced trauma. When he comes out of the blackout, Augustus will be confused and disoriented until he can figure out what happened and where he is. He genuinely has no accessible memory of what he does during a blackout.
Dead Man:
Walking away from the Genovese comes with a death sentence. After turning his back on a contract and going dark, Augustus is a target himself. The current contract is $2000, a slightly above average price. Virtually anyone who can deal with the Genovese can claim the kill if they make it.
Law of Survival:
Augustus' whole ethical compass is skewed towards the necessities of street survival. Honor, word-keeping, unshakeable loyalty to the tribe, ends justifying means and might making right are all hallmarks of this way of thinking. It can leave him at odds with others and get him in trouble where street realities do not mesh with legal ones.
It also turns Augustus to violence faster and when others might think it was entirely inappropriate. He has no compunction about violence to defend his name, save face, defend his space or people, take vengeance or survive, and will feel no guilt for it. This is not pro-social in normal circles.
No Tax:
Augustus has never paid taxes in his life. He has no discernible source of income. The IRS tends to frown on this kind of thing, and it is a barrier to owning any registered assets or regular employment. Settling up with the IRS for unpaid taxes would cost at least $100,000 or a few years in jail. He has not come to the IRS' attention for a lifestyle audit, but someone well-connected who does not like him might give them a nudge.
