Profile

Kept as a pet since she was a little girl, Mantis grew up sheltered. When her home was inadvertently blown to smithereens by the Guardians of the Galaxy, they offered her a place among them. Through the Guardians, she has found a way to cast off her shackles and reforge them into the bonds of friendship.

Description:

Standing at 5'6", she isn't imposing in height but there is something about how she carries herself. Mantis appears to be of Asian descent, yet her features are almost too sharp, with high cheekbones. She could have been sculpted by an artist considering that symmetry of her face. Her body is womanly with an underlying strength without being overly muscled.

There are two things that stand out about her physical appearance. Atop her head, extending out from within her black hair, are a pair of antennae. Additionally, at times, her skin will be green instead of the normal human coloration. These mark her as something more than human.

Her clothes can be demure or daring, depending on her mood and the situation.

History

History:

Mantis was a young empathic woman of an alien race, raised and kept as a pet on a foreign planet since she was a child. She found a way to lend assistance to the Guardians of the Galaxy during one of their missions, but unfortunately her home was blown to smithereens in the process. She was, therefore, offered a place among the Guardians, where she found bonds of friendship. With her own servitude ended, she became a full-fledged member of the Guardians and accompanied them on further adventures. She has the ability to sense other people's feelings, and somewhat alter them.

Personality:

Mantis has an easy-going personality that is rather Zen-like. She is comfortable with herself and her place in the world, as she perceives it. She's naïve to a fault, and is never one to cause strife or conflict, but she does have a bit of a protective streak. She is not intimidated or frightened easily, mostly because she is often oblivious to the danger.

Do You Feel That:
Mantis has the ability to influence the emotions of others to some extent. It is most often used to calm the rage of others, or impart a sense of peace and comfort to those who are in immersed in emotional turmoil or sorrow. It is a temporary fix, however, and will not last long beyond her contact with the individual, unless they find a way to hold onto it for longer. It may be resisted by an individual with an extremely powerful mental shield, or if Mantis' focus is broken.

Empathy:
Mantis can sense the emotions of other beings around her. This is something that just happens, not really a thing she turns on and off. Her range is anyone within fifteen metres, or about fifty feet. Emotions are not like thoughts and are difficult for people to block without specialized training. Mental telepathic blocks don't work on emotional states, in most cases. Mostly, she can just sense emotions and know how people are feeling. However, truly powerful emotions such as a blind rage would cause her to feel the emotions instead of just sensing them. Additionally, she is immune to empathic manipulation all but the most powerful empaths.

Sleep:

Mantis has the ability to put other beings to sleep by touching their head and imparting the command "sleep". It is deeply rooted in her psyche, along with the empathic abilities, and it is most likely related to them in some way as well. While this ability is extremely powerful, it may be partially or fully resisted by someone with an extremely powerful psychic shield or of great will power. For the average person, sleep will last several hours, or until Mantis likewise touches them and gives the command to "wake". In those with extremely strong will or psychic shields, the sleep duration can be significantly shorter. It may also be disrupted if Mantis loses focus during the initial induction of sleep.

Hand To Hand:
Mantis is good with grappling and general fisticuffs. She's quick and agile, and usually able to hold onto an opponent despite their best efforts to peel her off. The main purpose is to be able to maintain contact with an opponent so that she can put them to sleep with her abilities, and escape. But she's got focus and determination, and clings to an opponent like a honeysuckle vine.

Inspiring:

Due to her ability to affect the emotions of others, Mantis has learned what often inspires hope in others. As such, she has learned how to inspire and uplift others without using her powers, as well. It doesn't always work, but she's an effervescent soul that can often lift the spirits of others without even delving into her powers.

Contacts:
The Guardians of the Galaxy have a lot of contacts. With their contacts within the Ravagers, they have even more. Some are legitimate and good people. Others are criminals, such as those who fence their stolen goods. These people can sometimes be called on for various reasons, but the Ravagers themselves won't often be sticking their necks out for anybody.

Cream Or Sugar:
Due to a penchant for free intergalactic condiments, Mantis has an unparalleled collection of packets containing powdered coffee creamers. Since she's naturally boisterous, she's often discouraged from drinking coffee by the other guardians, but that doesn't keep her from collecting domestic and exotic creamer packets from every intergalactic stop.

Guardians:

As a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Mantis has an extremely powerful support group that is more like family than friends. They would risk their lives for her, and she would do the same for them.

Weaknesses

Alien Appearance:
Mantis has two antennae atop her forehead, and her eyes are large with black irises, which makes her an obvious alien, or at least different. There is no hiding that she isn't human. Curiously, there are a great number of species in the galaxy that are visually indistinguishable from human. Her species isn't one of them.

Empathy:
Being an empath can be difficult. Strong emotions can overwhelm Mantis, causing her to react and potentially ruining her focus. It can also mean she adopts those emotions in dealing with those around her. She does not get overwhelmed by something like anger but blinding rage would get past her defenses, for example.

Temper:

Mantis doesn't like bullies. She doesn't like people mistreating others in any way, particularly those unable to protect themselves. Unfortunately, when she sees such things, she gets upset and her temper can flare. If that happens, she tends to act without thinking about repercussions.
