Mack is a veteran SHIELD agent who came up through the SHIELD Academy program. Formerly the chief engineer of the Illiad, he has moved on to field work. Like all SHIELD agents, he is sharp, committed and determined to make the world a safer place. Even if that means creating a shotgun-axe and taking down the bad buys one by one.

Tall, bald and bearded, Mack has a long face, brown eyes and an almost ever-present frown. He wears blue jeans, a black t-shirt and an unbutton plaid shirt over top. If the weather is cold or wet, he may be wearing a black leather jacket as well. He wears scuffed black boots and his hands show traces of grease that no amount of washing quite gets off.
History

Mack grew up with his brother in his parents house. He did well in school and was not one to get into trouble. Technically and academically adept, Mack moved away for university to Georgetown, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to MIT for doctoral studies in the same discipline. Press coverage of disasters involving super-humans and mutants moved Mack around the time he was completing his dissertation. When he finished his degree, he applied to the SHIELD Academy and became an agent.
Mack's skills were put to work as a helicarrier engineer. Mack worked hard, proved to be a leader and moved up the ranks. Early in his career he also met Nicole. Within a year, she was pregnant. Unfortunately, Mack and Nicole's daughter, Hope, died after only four days. The loss drove Mack and Nicole apart. She moved away and Mack just lived for his work.
Not long after, Mack was promoted to the chief engineer of the Illiad. He was young for the position but handled the responsibility of leading a large technical staff very well.
Unfortunately, his time there was cut short by events in SHIELD. After the loss of a large number of agents and the emergence of the Avengers, SHIELD found itself short of solid, experienced field people. Mack switched over to field work and proved extremely valuable recovering, destroying, deactivating and otherwise dealing with dangerous technologies and their creators. He has had a number of partners across different assignments. Mack has had a smaller number of liaisons with others in SHIELD but nothing that led to a serious relationship.

Despite being a large and intimidating figure, Mackenzie will often avoid violence and attempt to find a peaceful solution to dangerous situations, waiting to get all the facts straight. However, when his friends are endangered, Mackenzie is more than willing to risk his life and kill those who threaten the people around him.
Mackenzie is also a very compassionate man, described as a big teddy bear to by one SHIELD agent.
The loss of his daughter Hope Mackenzie only a few days after she was born deeply affected Mackenzie, who is very private on that matter.
Mackenzie is deeply religious and often calls upon his Christian beliefs when put in harsh situations. This affected many of his decisions while working as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

EXPERT COMBATANT
Mackenzie is a skilled armed and unarmed melee fighter with a great deal of training, practice and real-life experience. He is prone to using his size and weight as an advantage against adversaries and has a particularly strong punch.
EXPERT ENGINEER
Mackenzie was the chief engineer of the Illiad helicarrier. He is capable of creating cloaking devices, fixing the Quinjet, and doing all kinds of repairs on the full range of advanced helicarrier mechanical, electrical and electronic systems. He has experience working with a range of extraterrestrial and dimension technologies and fully capable of doing advanced, independent invention and development.
EXPERT LEADER
Mackenzie is an expert leader, having managed a large staff as the Illiad's chief engineer. He is skilled at motivating, mentoring, training, monitoring and disciplining others to achieve tactical and strategic goals. He has the political and inter-personal skills to lead a large staff, deal with outside stakeholders and handle executive-level administration.
EXPERT MARKSMAN
Mackenzie is highly skilled with a range of small arms. He is even skilled with unconventional small arms such as his own shotgun-axe.

Mack was an outgoing doctoral student at MIT and made a wide range of friends and acquaintances. He has kept in touch with many of them over the years as they have spread into some of the world's leading commercial, academic and government labs in various disciplines. These alumni form a loose network of give and take that trade favours to help each other's careers.
SHIELD
Mack is an experienced SHIELD agent. He has access to information, backup, transportation, access, equipment, weaponry and technology that comes with working with such an advanced and high profile organization.
SHIELD TECH
As one of SHIELD's most senior engineers, Mack has access to an unusually large range of SHIELD technology and equipment, including items often restricted for research or safety purposes. Access needs duty-related reasons, but even if Mack just wants to tinker or create something new, he access to some of the best labs and equipment there is.

COMPASSION
Mack believes in redemption, forgiveness and compassion as duties owed to all. He is reluctant to kill unless absolutely necessary and quick to give the benefit of the doubt even when he knows it may come back to haunt him. This also means he does not believe in collateral damage and may abandon a primary mission objective to save a bystander's life, even if it means the bad guy gets away. Surely nobody would take advantage of such a soul!
ONLY HUMAN
No enhancements. No super abilities. No strange DNA or serums. Mack is in many ways an exceptional human, like all SHIELD agents, but he is only human. He handles injuries, disease, poison, radiation and age no better than anyone else. He is a small weak candle in world of towering infernos.
