Description
This teenager is absolutely all attitude and despite only being 165 cm in height she strikes an imposing figure. In a word, Goth, and not a poseur Goth either. Her black hair is up in untamed pigtail. Her ears are pierced, almost always sporting gothic cross earrings and often an assortment of hoops or studs. Her makeup befits her goth styling, featuring black eyeliner and black lipstick.
History
Lori Zechlin aka Black Alice is a teenage vigilante and magic-user. While her powers are potent she does not have the greatest level of control.
She was raised in Dayton Ohio and was a bit of a misfit and outsider from a very young age. She never really seemed like the other kids, seeing the world a bit more askew than all of them. She did have some friend, such as her best friend Dawn who went to elementary school with her.
Not that Dawn was an excellent influence, they both ended up going Goth together when they got into their Tweens and formed a 'coven' together. That was one of the first (and only) places that Lori really felt like she belonged. She also discovered she had the beginnings of actual magical talent, much to Dawn's dismay. Lori didn't know she was really just borrowing others abilities.
When her parents died in a car wreck on her thirteenth birthday things really went to hell, literally. Lori cried out for help, pleading to all the powers both light and dark and one of them answered her. She has no idea that anything actually intervened, and still doesn't know that it wasn't just luck and seatbelts that saved her life.
She emerged even more dysfunctional. Now she was in a foster home and the little orphan girl back in her school where she was already an outsider. Unsurprisingly because kids are cruel more bullying than ever before started to haunt her. Also her budding magical abilities really started to blossom, if uncontrolled, and her 'coven' kicked her out because of her 'dark' energy. When you break it down though Dawn was quite jealous.
The foster relationship didn't really turn out great either, her fellow foster kids were just a money source for the couple who took them in and they didn't really like Lori's goth inclinations. Which led to Lori deciding she didn't need any of that crap and running away when she was fourteen.
She has spent the first three years and change being morally ambiguous and a vigilante. Trying to learn her powers and cycling in and out of several very fringe groups. Shadowpact. The Secret Six. The Sisterhood of the Sleight of Hand. None of them really lasted very long but they each taught her something and helped her hone her abilities to borrow and hold magic. The time in The Secret Six was probably her favorite if she had to pick one, it was the closest to a family she had since her parents died.
She didn't make a lot of friends in the mystic community during those first years, no one likes their tricks borrowed even if it is passing and quite temporary. Her rough attitude and insulting tone didn't help at all either.
Personality
Maladjusted: Lori was a death worshipping Goth misanthrope just coming into her powers before her life even started to get really messed up. When she was barely a teenager and her family had a tragic automobile accident leaving her hurt and her family dead. She never ended up in a situation one would call normal from there on out. Vigilante groups. Mystic groups. An outsider in most communities. Her normal is just not other people's normal.
Bitter: It may be her parents death in that car crash. It may be how messed up the world is with the rich and poor, have and have nots, and mystic masters and petty larcenists. She is the larcenist in that equation, though she prefers to think of herself as the Robin Hood of the mystic arts. At the end of the day though she is bitter and angry a lot of the time, which blends nicely with her Gothness.
Abilities
HARD TO KILL
The entity that saved her from her car wreck that killed her parents has an investment. It either saved her from death or brought her back to life during that car wreck. It has absolutely shown itself willing to bring her back to life or spare her from death other times. Alice is also not at all aware of any of this. Until the entity gets what it wants Alice won't stay dead.
MAGICAL USURPATION
Black Alice is magical but with a very interesting twist.
She has the ability to as one might say borrow (others very much might say steal) other magical powers. Honestly though it is borrow because those powers always snap back to the owner. While she is borrowing those powers she gains all of it's skills and the powers themselves. This of course means the owner of those abilities is temporarily without them.
This does not make her very popular in magical circles.
To date there is no known limit to the distance at which she can temporarily borrow others abilities.
To make matters even more annoying to the magical community she has even been known to borrow the abilities of more than one magical being at once.
This ability is consciously controlled by Black Alice not an automatic theft (or borrowing if you prefer, Alice does).
Skills
OCCULTISM
Resources
HOME BASE
She has a home base in The Secret Six house in the suburbs of Gotham still and while the team has pretty much retired from Vigilantism and is laying low these days it is still somewhere she can go where she has a room to store her stuff.
INCOME
When someone can borrow the powers of the world's greatest mystics one doesn't really need to work a 9-5 job to 'acquire' some money.
MYSTIC ARTS
Weaknesses
DARK DEBT
Lori isn't aware of what or who saved her from death in the car accident that claimed her parents. They are not a force of light or good though and eventual the devil will get their due.
DISTRUST
It is really hard to trust someone who is borrowing your powers. Lori gets major distrust and side eye in the magical communities. This has persisted despite her being accepted as a student of the Sorcerer Supreme.
ODD EDUCATION
Is it something someone learned in High School or College? Is it not related to the mystic arts? Is it something you can't pick up on the streets or in a pseudo-paramilitary organization?
Then Black Alice doesn't know it. She doesn't have a high school education. She doesn't have a college degree. She has no GED. She probably has a degree in magic, but put her in real world scenarios and there are severe gaps.
POWER LIMITS
Black Alice's signature ability is not without limitations (much to everyone's relief).
Once she borrows someone else's power the clock starts ticking on how long she can hold onto the power she has temporarily borrowed before it slips back out of her grasp.
The more powerful the magical ability she has borrowed is, or if she tries to get super creative and borrow more than one at once, the shorter she will be able to hold onto it or them.
The upper limit on how many she can pull at once has been demonstrated to be four at this time.
To make matters more difficult to her, which honestly she deserves some difficulty for how rude this power can be to other magical people, how long she can hold on varies even when used on the same magical entity. Which means it is liable to leave Alice when dramatically appropriate, or at least the fates seem to believe so.
In general she can hold someone like Doctor Strange for about 30-60 seconds. Someone like Tracy-13 for an easier minute or even more. Doctor Fate or someone of his caliber for ten to twenty seconds. None of these are terribly long periods of time, but in a pinch every moment counts.
She can't keep going borrowing power after power either. Each theft takes a toll. The more powerful the energy she takes and holds the more tiring it is. This is subjective and left to dramatic appropriateness. But she is not an energizer bunny. She needs breaks and recovery time.
Which leads to the problems when she tries to pull in the abilities and skill to use it of a magical being greatly beyond her ability to comprehend it can have grave consequences. Alien Gods and Demon Lords of Hell caliber practitioners whose skills are so foreign and powerful can render Black Alice catatonic for a dramatically appropriate amount of time.
TRUST ISSUES
The trust street goes two ways really.
She isn't trusted. She doesn't trust easy.
This goes beyond her powers though and the black sheep status they have granted her.
She was a bit of a social outcast in school. Her friends turned out to be jealous and not trustworthy. She lost her parents at a young age. She was forced to grow up too fast and too soon with very untrustworthy organizations trying to use her.
None of this led to her trusting easy or fast. She needs consistent proof and even then she may be looking for the catch.
Which means she doesn't make friends easy.
Which means people don't trust her.
