Profile

Handpicked to be the partner of Captain America during World War II due to his natural fighting talent, James Barnes did all the morally-grey things Steve Rogers couldn't be seen doing on the newsreels. Thought lost towards the tail end of the war after a fatal fall, Bucky Barnes was declared MIA, presumed KIA. That was the end of his story... and the start of the story of the Winter Soldier. Since the mid-1950s, the Soviet horror story known as the Winter Soldier has hung like a spectre over the West and the Soviet Bloc alike, with increasing tallies of kills to his name. In that time, no one has come close to discovering or shutting him down.

History

James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes is a blend of his comic incarnation and MCU incarnation, with an origin following the comics, and elements drawn in later from the MCU.

A military brat born on an Army base, he lost his mother early in life, and his father in his teenage years. His young sister was sent to a boarding school, but Bucky stayed on at the base, looked after by his father's friends, up until his delinquency and tendency to pick fights drew the eye of the military brass. He had clear authority and anger issues, but also a very clear gift for combat, and so they decided to put him to use: sending him for intensive training with the British SAS and various combat luminaries of the time, and then assigning him to be the partner of Captain America.

The two eventually formed the core of the unit called the Invaders, a force that fought across the battlefields of World War II wherever it was needed. Of note, Bucky was captured and experimented upon by Hydra and Dr. Arnim Zola during the war, though the result of this would not come to fruition until later.

Bucky did not 'live' to see the end of the war. Early in 1945, he and Steve Rogers were lost in combat and presumed dead. Neither were actually killed, though their paths diverged sharply: frozen in ice, Steve would sleep in relative peace until his thaw in the present day.

Bucky, on the other hand, was found by Soviet troops, among which were a few Hydra plants, who reported that Dr. Zola's experiment had returned to their grasp. Content to control from the shadows, Hydra let the USSR take public charge, and Bucky was taken to Department X, where he was revived -- the nascent serum in his blood, left over from Zola's earlier experimentation, had just barely kept him alive. It was found that he had no memory of his life, nothing left in his head save the reflex memories of how to fight and how to kill. The USSR and Hydra saw opportunity. His severed left arm was replaced with a bionic implant, and Dr. Zola finalized the process he had begun years before, creating him as a super-soldier with the constitution to bear the advanced prosthetic. He was reprogrammed with a new personality, one where he believed himself to be a wounded, rootless Soviet soldier who had volunteered for the project that would dictate the next eighty years of his life: the Winter Soldier Project. The most formidable weapon in the arsenal of the Soviet Union. The last word punctuating the USSR's bloody statements.

Over time, he became a propaganda hero and boogeyman to his own adopted Russian people, a mythological ghost haunting and bleeding the West, and variously a demon, a monster, or a beast in all the other corners of the world where he was commanded to kill. He is known by various local codenames in the classified files of many nations, but ever since a crucial information leak in the 1970s, he has been properly known in the intelligence community by name: Winter Soldier.
