Profile

Gotham's queen of crime. The Joker's right hand woman. The one and only Harley Quinn. Former gymnast, former criminal psychologist, now certified lunatic. Once known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, she is infamous as the psychologist who entered Arkham to cure the Joker and emerged as his partner in crime. Since then she's racked up a rap sheet a mile long, mostly in partnership with the Clown Prince, and has the dubious distinction of being one of the few people in his organization to (so far) survive his capers.

History:

Oh I could be bounded in a nutshell,
And count myself a king of infinite space...
Were it not that I have bad dreams."
- Hamlet, II.ii

What makes the difference, between madness and sanity? The flip of a coin, the roll of a die? The tumble of cards? The voice of a Madman?

Harley Quinn was born Harleen Quinzel, a sweet, well educated girl who had everything she could ever want out of life. Successful parents in their respective jobs who doted on their only daughter and made everything all nice and perfect in her life. A gifted gymnast from a young age, athletic scholarship to Gotham State University, and eventual graduate with a major in Criminal Psychology. On the surface Harleen Quinzel appeared to have it all. Beautiful, talented, ambitious.

And then she met him. . .

As an intern at Arkham Asylum, Harleen pushed her superiors, angled and fought until they finally allowed her private sessions with Arkham's most infamous resident, the Joker. Harleen was confident in her abilities, certain that she would succeed where others had failed... and for a time? Thought she made a huge progress. Standing on the edge of the abyss she delved deep into what drives the Joker, believing that by showing him there is someone who understands him, that she could lead him to open his heart to her and find his way back to some semblance of sanity. But when you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back.

In Harleen he gained a sympathiser, a confidant, it was not his fault, the childhood horrors, negligent parents, the tone deaf society that had failed him in his youth. That had led him to the acts of criminality that landed him in Arkham. Was he really wrong, to rage against it? To take matters into his own hands where society would not?

Over time, Harleen fell in love with this poor, wounded man, so maltreated by society... demonized by the self-righteous Bat determined to snuff out the last threads of hope and leave him to rot in despair, forgotten in Arkham. And over time, this became less and less acceptable to his Harley. Quite without her superiors realising the young psychologist became obsessed with her patient. And this led to the incident that made Dr. Harleen Quinzel infamous in criminal psychology.

There's still debate, in some circles, as to what moment Harleen Quinzel chose to walk into a "Costume, Tricks and Party Gags" store and walked out in a harlequin outfit. Was it her own impetus? The inspiration of the Joker? Regardless, the petite blonde subsequently broke into the Arkham Asylum and broke out her puddin' by force. The beginning of a crime spree that has only gotten wilder and more violent in partnership with the Joker.
