Profile

As the daughter of Gotham's police commissioner, Barbara grew up steeped in police culture and the law. Although she ultimately wound up taking her degrees in programming and forensic psychology, she also has a minor in business law. Because of her connections, it was pretty simple to get an 'in' as a freelance computer forensics consultant with GCPD. And it leaves her free to pursue her 'night job' on the streets as Batgirl or in the darker regions of the Internet locating criminals' money.

Description:

The statuesque redhead before you is a lovely young woman. The fact that she's nearly 6 feet tall automatically draws the eye, and then the fact that her head is crowned by a mass of curling red hair is just icing on the cake. Her face is a oval, with defined cheekbones and full lips flanked by a dimple on the right. Every time she quirks a smile, it flashes into view. Her eyes are a deep ocean blue and are watchful. She is clearly an athletic woman, with toned arms that have nicely defined musculature and strong, sleek legs. She moves gracefully, her kinesthetic awareness of her own position and the space around her high. She wears a sleek blue dress with a chevron design that highlights all the curves she's sporting, and three-inch heels guarantee that she towers over most people.

History:

Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Jim Gordon, of GCPD fame. From an early age, she proved to be smart as a whip, adventurous, and just fearless enough to be troublesome and no doubt a handful or more for her dad to handle, even compared to dealing with a police force in a city of vigilantes and super villains. Of course, her childhood mischief was nothing compared to what would come later.

As her high school days came to a close, Barbara found herself more and more consumed with the vigilante of Gotham, Batman. She would read everything she could find on him, research on the internet, she even volunteered to help the GCPD with their computer systems, partly to gain access to their files. And soon enough, she hatched herself a plan. At first it was just to go to a costume party as 'Batgirl', a way to bridge the day to day life of an energetic college student and her little obsession with Batman. Of course, she wasn't expecting the night to turn out with one of Gotham's classic armed robberies, or for her to use ther self defense classes and her costume to save the day as it were. But after that one night, well, it's not like she could just -stop-.

Indeed, as Barbara continued her own vigilante activities, she learned more, gained experience, and eventually even met Batman and Robin. After proving herself, she was basically part of the family as it were. Things were great, she had as much of a thriving civilian life as one can when going out all night fighting crime, which is to say most of her few friends thought she was a librarian by day and a shut-in by night. And of course, that thriving crime fighting life, feeding that need for adrenaline and excitement.

But crimefighting's one of those high impact lifestyles like MMA or motocross, some people are in for the long haul, and some find themselves leaving. Barbara didn't completely abandon crimefighting, if anything she's more active than ever online, her skill with computers and knack for knowing people letting her reach out further from Gotham than a snap-on cape and bat-shaped accessories did. Of course, now and then she still goes out... after all, sometimes you just need to teach a mugger the old fashioned way.

Personality:

When she first came to the cowl, Barbara was full of optimism and enthusiasm. Gotham's seamier side has taken its toll on her, and it's a far more sober young woman who walks the streets these days. Her father might wish that she'd chosen an occupation other than crimefighting, but hey.. at least he talked her out of the police academy! (Of course, he didn't know she was already on the streets in a mask.) She is still fast on her feet with a quip and a flirt, though, and a ready smile for most people.

The flip side of Barbara's personality is that especially when she's on the streets, she has a driving need for justice. For people not to be hurt or taken advantage of when she can stop it. She does this both in a cowl and acting as a sometimes behind-the-scenes support person for the other caped and cowled ones. Her world requires a balance of the light and the dark, because it really would be very easy to get jaded and stop caring.

Bat Skills:
Climbing, zip lining across town, sneaking into places, picking locks, surveillance, combat driving. You name it, she's learned it since she began this gig as Batgirl. The sheer breadth of these skills is mind-boggling, and if one were to list all of them, it would probably take all day.

Martial Arts:
Barbara has spent a number of years now learning things like judo and taekwondo on her own. When she became Batgirl, her training was escalated exponentially because Batman wasn't going to have her get hurt on his watch. She is a solid fighter -- though she'll never put Batman on the mat, she can hold her own and take down most other foes.

Oracle:

Barbara Gordon is, arguably, one of the best computer programmers and hackers in the world. She's just the hacker no one knows, hidden in the shadows of the DarkWeb, more rumor than fact. Much like Batman in the real world, Oracle is the hacker that hackers whisper about. Taking the handle of Oracle, she didn't BURST onto the hacking scene so much as slipped in unnoticed and weaseled her way into the most secure systems on the planet. Skye Johnson and a very few others are in the same tier when it comes to computer security, but even they can't get a solid lead on Oracle. This has to do with Barbara's access to alien tech and encryption protocols that she has modified and integrated so seamlessly that they are completely unique on this planet.

Batman Family:
It's funny where you find family sometimes. In Barbara's case, what started out as something of a fangirl obsession has become the real deal. Training under Batman himself, along with all the other proteges who have come and gone, Barbara is one of the lynchpins of this group. She will give Bruce and the others everything she has to give when they need her, and they will do the same for her.

This also expands into access to the resources under the control of the family. Bruce's pockets seem bottomless, so whatever is needed, it is quickly obtained.

Commissioner Gordon:
Well, let's just call him Dad. Jim Gordon is a busy man, a cop, sometimes a tough man. But he is a good father. And he would do anything for his daughter. Barbara believes him at this time to be unaware of her nighttime activities and she takes great pains to keep him in the dark. If she ever needed anything at all, she knows she could call on her father and he would move heaven and earth for her.

Gear:
Barbara's Batgirl gear is an impressive collection of body armor and useful tools that she obtained and learned to use under the tutelage of Batman. There are a wide array of miniature gas pellets, flash-bangs, assorted other kinds of equipment like cuffs and grappling hooks. All the tricks of the Bat-trade, she has in her arsenal.

In addition to this, Barbara has begun to build herself a powerful computer array. Her day job helps with this activity, and Barbara finds herself not simply working this activity during the day anymore. Sometimes she's just the voice in Batman or Nightwing's ear when they need someone monitoring security cameras or following the money while they're on a stake-out. She's finding it both enjoyable *and* well worth her time. It actually has given her a glimpse of what she might be doing when she finally decides to hang up the cape.

Oracle's Aerie:

Oracle has an edge that no other hacker in the world has -- Barbara's access to the BatComputer and Bruce's tendency to make *darn sure* that he has hold of the best tech -- human AND alien -- that can be obtained, whether legally or not.

The array that Oracle has built is kind of the BatComputer on steroids. In addition to the best Earth-created security on the planet, both the BatComputer and Oracle's Aerie have programs laced intricately with not only Kryptonian encryption but also integrated with security protocols from various other alien programs with which Bruce absconded from the Justice League (and others, since we have an integrated universe here).

Barbara has melded all of these protocols and encryptions into a unique kind of multi-layered encryption language. She has zero intention of EVER being hackable -- not with the information that is at her disposal. She also uses this tech to make a great deal of her machinery essentially invisible, so even if someone gets close in a hack attempt, the path into her array twists and turns like the Minotaur's maze, such that the hacker could be lost in there indefinitely. There are alert programs embedded all over the place to let her know if anyone attempts to get in -- and in the worst-case scenario, if for any reason the Aerie array is breached, there is what amounts to a Doomsday virus that will wipe all data *and* infect the attacker's computer as well.

Loyalties:
Barbara's loyalties to the Bat-Family are certainly a strength, but they can also be a weakness. She will go to the aid of anyone in this group when called, so it can be turned against her by villains. She would go to the aid of her father without question -- and again, this link and loyalty could be turned against her. When you do a job as dangerous as the one she does at night, having people you love is a huge risk because they can be used to take you down. It doesn't mean she'll give them up, though.

Secret Identities:

Barbara sports two of them. Her street identity as Batgirl must be carefully kept -- she's a known entity to many on the Gotham police force, so she has to watch her step whenever they arrive on a situation. Luckily, however, most people see what they choose to see -- who would guess that the Commissioner's *daughter* is out here in a cape running around kicking people's butts?? Exposure risks not only Barbara herself but her father and his career too, so she doesn't mess around. And just the fact that she's doing these jobs also takes a toll on her daytime identity too -- how do you explain to someone that you're tired because you have been awake 36 hours cuz, well, Batgirl was needed last night. It can be tough.

The second is her online handle of Oracle. She is beginning to make a significant name for herself in the Internet undergound as someone who blows the whistle on criminal enterprises and exposes the paper trails of bad people. She has gone to great lengths to make this identity unhackable and untraceable. Few in the world are quite as good at that as she, and she has Batman to back her up as well. Between them, the Oracle identity has been barricaded effectively. But there's always that chance...
