Profile

Owner of the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme and wielder of the Eye of Agamotto, the former world-class neurosurgeon now spends his days keeping the Earth safe from interdimensional Mystical invasion. Doctor Strange, Stephen to those who know him well, found a way around damaged nerves in his hands through the use of the Mystic Arts. After spending many years in the mythical city-compound of Kamar-Taj and learning from the Ancient One, he returned to the New York Sanctum Sanctorum. Usually prone to reclusive activities in the mansion, he emerges every now and then to fight alongside other heroes in defense of humankind. Intelligent, confident, and sometimes prickly, the good Doctor is a friend indeed when one is in need. After all, 'First do no harm' means there's a kind heart behind the stern façade.

With professionalism and formality as his first front, this man exudes a controlled, deeply-rooted confidence in his general mein. The hard-earned and early silvering at his temples in his black hair, usually tamed but for some stubborn bangs that hang, adds to the gravitas until he smiles. Sly charm generally shows its face here and twinkles in steel-blue eyes, though the carefully-kept goatee and overriding self-restraint keeps the air from immaturity and towards class. At two inches over six feet, his height and breadth of shoulders bely a grace hard-earned through the studies in the Mystic Arts. Red scarring crisscrossing his hands is seen if one looks or catches sight of it; he has a tendency to hide his hands away, be it by folding his arms, having them in various pockets, or by wearing gloves.

Finding the man in his usual daywear means a dress shirt in various colors (primarily white) and black dress pants along with indoor shoes of some sort; rarely, a waistcoat in crimson color with lining of gold stitching completes the outfit.

Catching him in the garb of the mantle is an entirely different affair. Storm-blue battle-leathers, with a decidedly Eastern monk styling, include a long-sleeved undershirt and tunic that would billow unless kept in line by wrist-wrappings and several brown belts about his waist. Belted pants and boots with multiple securing straps in similar dusk-blue hues complete the base outfit. The crimson Cloak of Levitation hangs from his shoulders, supple for its weight and checkered on the inner lining. At his neck hangs the Eye of Agamotto, a golden amulet containing a green gemstone.

History

Born in November of 1986 during a vacation to Pennsylvania, its clear that Stephens parents werent expecting his arrival then. Oldest of three with a younger sister by two years and youngest brother by seven, he was always the protective one over them. An interest in medicine began with aiding sister Donna through a mild injury when both were young. Unfortunately, interest and the beginnings of pre-medical studies meant nothing when he was unable to save her from drowning.

He earned his medical degree from Columbia University and completed his residency at New York-Presbyterian. Before the age of thirty, he was considered a world-class neurosurgeon. The loss of his mother followed not long after by his father caused Strange to pull away from his family. Egotistical, hurting, an argument with his brother about his lack of presence at his dying fathers side led to an argument. This, in turn, led Victor to rush from the hospital and into the street where he met his death by vehicular contact.

A car accident around three years after the death of the last member of his family left Strange with severe, irreversible trauma to his hands. This ended his illustrious career as neurosurgeon and began the next chapter in his life, which included a last-ditch plane ticket to the far East in search of the fabled city-compound of Kamar-Taj. In speaking with the Ancient One there, he learned of magic and began an apprenticeship with the elder Sorcerer Supreme. This apprenticeship lasted many years and he progressed at a talented speed through it. In the end, and after a contest verses Death in which he gained his odd type of immortality, Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme. This enabled him to wield the power of the Eye of Agamotto fully as well as call upon the Vishanti in times of great need. He resides within and guards one of the three Sanctum Sanctorums, this particular mansion located in New York in Greenwich Village.

Personality

Strange is easily considered an ambivert, where he can be charming and social in one instance and prickly and taciturn the next. Though not likely to teach in a traditional sense, he carries the air of formal leadership that one requires within the role. Known for his self-confidence and sharp wit, the Sorcerer Supreme exudes finesse in all that he does. This likely rubs some people the wrong way and the "guardian" quickly becomes the "control-freak." Preferring a quiet cup of tea in the Sanctum after throwing down with the demons of other dimensions, he's hard to reach, but loyal beyond compare to those who share his values. On the spectrum of MBTI types, he'd be most likely classified as ENFJ.

ASTRAL PROJECTION
After many years of practice, Strange gained the ability to separate his soul/Astral Form from his physical body, allowing him access to the Astral Plane. This form can travel beyond the limits of physics, though it is not immune to powerful Mystical attacks. He begins to suffer adverse effects after 24 hours of separation; being trapped outside of his body would be a harrowing experience.

CHANNELING
Strange has the ability to channel (or rather, borrow) the power of the various deities he calls upon through his incantations and casting. This generally takes a spoken spell as well as a toll, depending on whom hes channeling. One god is easier to channel than three, for example (Cyttorak vs. the Vishanti). Additionally, the strength of the deity channeled dictates the strength of the spellcasting.

By channeling the Mystical power of Agamotto through the Eye of Agamotto, a relic necklace, he can influence space-time continuum, but at a great cost to his stores of physical and mental endurance.

IMMORTALITY
Gifted (grudgingly by Death) with an odd sense of immortality, Strange cannot age or be killed by human disease. However, he can be felled by the effects of malnutrition, thirst, exhaustion, or sleep deprivation. Overwhelming wounds can kill him, though he remains difficult to do so regardless.

SIGHT
The Sight, or the use of the Third Eye, allows Strange to see the Unseen. All around is the supernatural and the Mystical and utilizing this shows this to him. He can see spells, curses, auras, invisible creatures, tracks left behind, etc.

Connected to the Sight is a sense of universal awareness, accessed in great detail through meditation. Without quieting his mind, Strange can sense the general well-being of the Earth and its nearby dimension in a vague manner.

SORCERY
The mantle bestowed upon him is Sorcerer Supreme. Thus, he is one of the best (if not //the// best) at utilizing magic to bring his will into being. Through his studies at Kamar-Taj, he learned to access his inherent potential to wield the Mystic Arts. This encompasses all of the Arts, including both Chaos and Black magic, both of which he wont use unless in dire need.

By combining different Words to distort reality, Strange can warp the elements to his will, banish interlopers back to their own realms, move objects about, conjure objects, and even take enemies apart at an atomic level. Illusory spells allow him to take advantage of his enemys moments of distraction to think of the next step (and make for amazing pranks). Shields can also be summoned and dispel most magic as well as physical attack, but moderately-powerful physical attacks may crack them and they prove weak against psychic attacks being kinetic in nature.

Banishment is his specialty, hence the need to manipulate the walls and veils between realities. Opening Gates proves to be the easiest method to access different places as well as rid the Earth of baddies.

WILLPOWER

The critical lynchpin to everything he does. It takes the finest control to exert his wishes upon the manner in which his spellcasting manipulates reality and the mule-headed confidence hes known for to bolster it all. If Strange desires that it happens within the bounds of his Mystical power, it is nearly impossible to defeat the realization. After all, the impossibilities are endless.

COMBINED CASTING
In tandem with another knowledgeable practitioner, he can create a positive feedback loop to further increase the power of a spell cast. Practicing came about with the help of Wanda Maximoff, a Witch and experienced evocator.

FORMER NEUROSURGEON
Having fallen from world-class status is a hard thing to swallow, but it has its benefits. With an M.D. and Ph.D. in neurosurgery, this enables him to utilize his medical knowledge to aid in stabilizing the wounded and dealing with immediate trauma. He chooses to consult other surgeons seeing as his hands continue to tremble unless he uses magic to still them.

MARTIAL ARTS
One can't always utilize the Mystic Arts to defend oneself and thats where the many lessons at Kamar-Taj come in extremely handy. Strange is an expert in variations of many Eastern forms of martial arts, including Tai Chi, Shaolin Wushu, and Malla-Yuddah. Having been a neurosurgeon gives him the added advantage is knowing where pockets of delicate nerves exist in the human body for an extra level of hurt leveled on opponents. Having owned and currently owning at least one Mystical sword, it behooves him to have learned how to defend himself with them; he has moderate skill in this.

OCCULTISM

Being the Sorcerer Supreme entails being at the top of your game all of the time in order to protect the Earth and its surrounding dimensions from trouble. A drive for continued learning keeps Strange at a masterful level of knowledge of the occult, which includes the cults who worship the various interdimensional deities that he either calls upon or banishes.

ANCIENT ONE
Sometimes, the one who seems to know it all doesnt know it all. Accessing the wisdom of the Ancient One comes via Mystical connections and Strange will do it from time to time, simply because he hasnt lived as long as the venerated Sorcerer who once held his mantle.

BOOK OF VISHANTI
Acting as both record for Stranges experiences and collection of the most powerful of spells of benevolence, the Book of the Vishanti contains all counter-spells known to Mystic-kind. Note that the spells have a strong leaning towards defensive vs offensive, perfectly in harmony with the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme as defender of Earth.

CLOAK OF LEVITATION
Fickle friend and enabler of flight beyond spells, the crimson Cloak is incredibly durable and able to be commanded by Strange even when not upon his person. It makes for a surprising aid in a fight, able to wrap up an opponent or snap at undefended parts to buy its master more time. It seems nearly sentient and might even have a sense of humor, situation-dependent.

EYE OF AGAMOTTO
Created by Agamotto of the Vishanti, the Eye is a self-empowered artifact with an extensive list of powers. It most often channels the power of Agamotto himself and enables Strange to see beyond even the Sight, revealing illusions and uncovering truth otherwise difficult to find. Most famously, he utilizes it to alter the flow of time.

NETWORK OF MYSTICS
As Sorcerer Supreme, Strange is in contact with many a practitioner throughout all the continents and realities alike, at all levels of ability. Forewarning often comes from outside the Sanctum and possibly even outside the Realm proper. He doesnt take his connections lightly.

RELIC COLLECTION
Access to many a relic squirreled away in the Sanctum gives Strange ways to further enhance his powers or use less willpower to engender a spell. The Wand of Watoomb and Orb of Agamotto are excellent examples of many relics contained within the Sanctum.

SANCTUM
Practically a dimension in itself, the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York is called home as well as one of three Mystical anchors of Sanctum mansions around the globe (the others being in Hong Kong and London). These serve as places of safety as well as reliquaries and collection points for hundreds of rare magical books. From here, Strange can assume a semblance of a private and semi-public life beyond that of his mantle. Built overtop the Dragon ley line and on ground already innundated with previous Mystical power, the wards surrounding the place are nearly impenetrable; even the gods have difficulty making their way inside.

SHOP SALES

With his little side shop in the Sanctum, income enters his accounts in small amounts via the sales of various (harmless) esoteric items, from books on magical history, candle and masks, to posters and t-shirts. It brings in enough for simple things like bills, groceries, and a little spending here and there.

DIET
The intense study of magic as well as its usage has changed Strange on a physiological level. Standard human fare is no longer palatable or digestible. This leaves him with tea, nutritional slurries, and interdimensional food that would make most folk pale around the mouth if not vomit to attempt to eat. Its hard to keep muscle weight on with such dietary restrictions, especially with his build, but he manages.

GODTOUCHED
The gods use their chosen hard and with Strange as their most powerful pawn in the Vishantis game, the man has to deal with //all// of the positives and flaws of his mantle bestowed by them. He needs to shepherd the Fate of manking along without actively steering its progress. If they forbid him to speak of something, he must stay quiet or risk his own sanity, even if it means that another human dies in the process. What is anathema to the Vishanti must be to him, even if it makes little sense or falls into direct conflict with his own feelings.

Borrowing the power of the deities also accrues a number of debts that can be called upon at any time according to the deity in question. This is a hassle when it happens, without a doubt.

HIPPOCRATIC OATH
His compass-north and soul-mantra, "First do no harm", influences all of his decisions. Even if another person might drive the knife home, his response would be to banish the bad guy away rather than spill blood. Containment first, management next, damage last and only if critically need be.

HUBRIS
Success at being the best means that its difficult for Strange to remain humble at times. Paired up with high levels of self-confidence, this makes his falls all the harder when he trips over his own ego. Prick his pride at your own risk; its hard for him to forgive it, much less forget it.

ROGUES GALLERY
If its a malevolent supernatural entity, its gunning for him and, by proxy, everyone and everything he holds dear. Suspicious of everything novel, its hard for him to trust others. To others, he may seem somewhat paranoid; to those who understand, its being prepared for the worst.

RULE OF SHADE
The general public, termed the Mundane by him, should not know of magic because what they dont understand frightens them. The Mystical community doesnt need a second witchhunt on the scale of the Inquisition. Hed love to be as visible as many of the other metahumans and superheroes, but prefers his privacy over all else, with all the lack of advantage that entails.

SCARRED FISTS

With damage unable to be fixed by modern medicine, shaking hands means no more neurosurgery practice. When not imbued with steadying magic, they shake slightly and visibly. Strange tends to keep them hidden away with pockets, gloves, folding his arms, you name it. Scars imply weaknesses and the Sorcerer Supreme should have //no// weaknesses.
