With her alien heritage, Kara has several advantages when exposed to yellow solar radiation. Her body absorbs the radiation, acting as a battery for all of her powers. Also, she heals and recovers quickly with exposure to yellow solar radiation. While she can't regenerate lost limbs or organs, minor and even serious wounds heal about a dozen times faster than the equivalent level of trauma would on a human.

You see a girl in her late teens, about 165 cm tall, and of a slim, athletic build. Long, flowing blonde hair spills over her shoulders, and frames a heart-shaped face. Her skin is white with a light tan, indicating that she spends a lot of time outdoors. Her eyes are a light, almost translucent blue, and her lips have a slight upturn at the corners, showing that she tends to smile a lot.

She is dressed in a two piece costume of a top and skirt, almost like a cheerleader. The top is blue, long sleeved. The sleeves come down to her wrists. The skirt is red, coming down about mid-thigh., and held up at her waist by a gold coloured belt. She wears red boots with a slight heel, and tops that come to a twin point at the middle of her shins.

A red cape that comes down to her waistline hangs from her shoulders. On the middle of her chest, there are the sigils of a gold, pentagonal shield, rimmed with a red border and containing a red capital 'S'. The shield pattern is copied on the back of her cape, but all in gold with black stitching outlining the rim of the shield, and the belt buckle is an all gold version of the shield as well.

Like her vision, Supergirl's hearing is magnitudes of times greater than human. She can hear a pin drop 15 kilometres away, or listen to a normal conversation from low Earth orbit. She can also focus in on a sound to determine its location, like the source of a scream in a busy city. She can also hear ultra-sonic and sub-sonic waves, like radio frequencies.
Kara Zor-El was born into the House of El, one of the oldest and most respected of the noble houses of Krypton. Her father Zor-El, was a respected scientist and her mother Alura, was a renowned artist. As Kara grew, Krypton began entering a period of tectonic instability, leading to ground tremors becoming a near constant part of daily life. Kara's uncle Jor-El, the most respected scientist on Krypton, and head of the House of El, argued that the quakes would continue to grow in intensity until they would eventually destroy Krypton. Despite Jor-El and Zor-El's warning, the majority of the Science Council believed in the advanced computer simulations that showed that this phase would begin to subside eventually, returning Krypton to its normal stability. When Jor-El and Zor-El began to raise their concerns in public, the Science Council rebuked them, threatening to charge the brothers with inciting unrest and treason.

Seeing their warning fall on deaf ears, Jor-El and Zor-El began working on a program of constructing rockets that could be used to evacuate at least some of the population to Krypton to a small planet orbiting a yellow star that Zor-El had discovered. Two prototypes were created, intended to test the hyperspace drives, when the severity of the quakes accelerated suddenly; Krypton had entered its terminal stage and had only days left. With time running out, suspension capsules were fitted in the rockets, designed to keep the single occupant of each in a state of suspended animation during the decades long trip to Earth; it was decided that the last two children of the House of El, Kara and her newborn cousin Kal-El, would be the ones to escape Krypton's fate. Kal-El's rocket was launched first, and Kara's rocket was barely launched before it was too late. The shockwave of Krypton's explosion knocked Kara's rocket off course; and while Kal-El's rocket would arrive safely on Earth as planned, the guidance system in Kara's rocket would have to make a course correction that would cause her to reach Earth decades after her infant cousin had. When Kara finally arrived (crashed) on Earth, the first person to discover her was her now adult cousin, who had become Earth's greatest hero, Superman.

Still a teenager, Kara was taken to Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers, scientists working at S.T.A.R. Labs who had assisted Superman many times before. Fake identity papers were created for Kara, setting her up as a relative of Jeremiah's, whose parents had been killed in a car wreck in Coast City, California, and was now being adopted by the Danvers. Kara Danvers began learning about life as a human while homeschooling for two years. She also bonded with her new older sister, Alex, the Danvers' only natural child, who is attending the University of Starling in an intense biosciences program. It is only in the last year she has been given the opportunity to truly explore the world and attend a school, although it is private. She has already been fighting the good fight during the last year as Supergirl.

Bon Vivant: Despite the primitive technology of Earth, Kara is fascinated by her new home. All the variety in food, music, and people excite her after living in the more conservative and controlled society of Krypton. She wants to go out and experience everything life on Earth has to offer; whether it's swimming in a rainforest lake or listening to jazz in a Paris cafe, or eating a slice of pizza fresh from the oven in Starling.

Determined: Once Kara makes up her mind, it's nearly impossible for someone to change it. She doesn't back down on things she thinks are important like justice, being a hero, and doing the right thing. Compromising and making deals are not her strong points.

Friendly: Kara has a very open and cheerful manner and she makes friends easily. While she may act shy and subdued in her secret identity, that's not really her. She will happily chat away with other heroes, especially those of her own age. She wants to have a life here on Earth and a big part of that is having friends.

Headstrong: Kara is still learning about being a hero, and she often charges in when she should hold back. Fortunately, she has all those Kryptonian powers to let her turn the tide on ambushers and hostage situations, but one day her impulsiveness will probably get her in serious trouble. If there's a crime being committed or other situation calling for a hero, she's going to be there if she knows about it.

Optimistic: Kara has a rather positive outlook on life and on humanity in general. Sure bad things happen and there are bad people, but things keep getting better every day. And she's proud of herself and her cousin for helping make things better in the world. Criminals might dodge the law for a bit, but they'll get caught and punished eventually. In the end, the good guys will win.

Protective: Having lost everything in her life with the destruction of Krypton, Kara is very protective of the things she has. Her new family, her friends, and Earth in general; all of these things she would fight for and die to keep safe. Nothing gets her angrier than when someone she cares about is threatened.
Kara's vision allows her to see things 150 kilometres away as if they were 5 metres away from her. She can also focus her vision to view objects and events that are on the nanometre scale. Finally, she can also see through objects, from stone that's dozens of feet thick to clothing. She can control this x-ray vision to see through layers and detect things buried inside a wall or weapons concealed under clothing. Her x-ray vision is blocked by lead.

Supergirl can fly at speeds that shatter the sound barrier. She is capable of escape velocity and can fly from Earth to the moon in about 30 minutes. While in the atmosphere, she tries to keep her speed under Mach 3 unless it's an emergency. Through the use of orbital trajectories and flight, Kara can be anywhere on the planet within one minute.

An additional effect of her x-ray vision, Supergirl can emit beams of concentrated energy from her eyes, capable of cutting through or welding steel and armour plating. She can control the temperature effect so that she can heat up or melt firearms in the hands of opponents without harming them. Usually, though, she uses this ability to repair damaged metal like train rails, bridges, and ruptured hulls. Or, quickly heat up a Hot Pocket from the freezer.

Supergirl also has near invulnerability thanks to her physiology. She can survive anything up to a tactical missile with little or no damage. Bullets and artillery shells just bounce off her or knock her back. Energy blasts tend to be more effective, with power equivalent to a bolt of lightning having some effect. She can still be stunned or shaken, and concentrated explosions or energy blasts will start to have an effect on her. Kara can also survive in high pressure, heat, cold, or radiation environments without effect and can survive space without protection. When in an environment where an atmosphere is not present, Kara can hold her breath for up to 5 hours.

Kara's Kryptonian physiology gives her tremendous strength on Earth and other yellow solar environments. While not as strong as her cousin, she can still perform feats of strength such as lifting a fully loaded tanker or cargo ship, tearing through steel that is several feet thick, or holding up a damaged bridge while repairs are made. Combined with her other powers, she can do things like tunnel through solid rock or construct a skyscraper in a matter of days.

Kara's adoptive human family in Starling, Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers are world-renowned scientists working at S.T.A.R. Labs in North Vancouver, and they are dedicated to ensuring that Kara has a safe environment in Riverdale to finish maturing in on Earth. For their part, the Danvers view Kara as much a daughter as their real one, Alex, and Kara holds similar affection for them; they're not her parents, but they are family. Alex Danvers, Jeremiah and Eliza's daughter, is a few years older than Kara, and has gotten into the idea of having a younger sister, even though Alex is mostly at the University of Starling attending classes. Radioactive pieces of Krypton travelled through the hyperspace wake of Kal and Kara's rockets, landing on Earth. These green fragments emit a radiation that is deadly to Kryptonians yet harmless to humans (although long term constant exposure can cause radiation poisoning in humans). Just being within 5 meters of the presence of kryptonite will drain all superhuman abilities from Supergirl. Her strength will plummet to being equal to a human invalid and she will start to sicken.
