Jessica Drew is the daughter of Jonathan and Miriam Drew, a pair of scientists whose work involved splicing spider and human DNA. The research of the couple drew the attention of HYDRA, and her parents moved to a research facility at Wundagore Mountain, with the financial backing of HYDRA. While still within her mother's womb, Jessica was subjected to genetic experimentation to imbue her with the traits and abilities of several different types of spiders. The attempt was successful.<br><br>As a young child, Jessica remained at Wundagore Mountain, raised by a Cow-Human hybrid creature named Bova, following the mysterious disappearance of her parents, making for quite the unusual childhood for young Jessica. Upon reaching maturity, Jessica was recruited, under false pretenses, by the Organization HDYRA, claiming that they could help her find what happened to her parents.<br><br>To become what Hydra intends her to be, a skilled fighter and assassin, she was given to the Taskmaster for special intense training in combat, assassination, and espionage. Upon completing her HYDRA training under the whip of the Taskmaster, Jessica is put to work for HYDRA's agenda, but she begins to see through the web of lies she has been told and discovers that HYDRA was the likely culprit in her parent's disappearance, having had misgivings and doubts about HYDRA's intentions towards their daughter.<br><br>With the mounting suspicion, doubts, and weakening of her conditioning and brainwashing, Jessica decided to defect during a mission she was sent to assassinate Nick Fury. She spent some time detained by SHIELD, debriefed, and deprogrammed from her HYDRA brainwashing, but she was eventually given a chance by the organization, and has since become a trusted ally and member of SHIELD, one of their top Metahuman agents.
