Matthew Murdock is one half of the Hell's Kitchen based firm of Nelson and Murdock, lawyers known for standing up for the little guy and winning, even if their client can't afford to pay them.

Daredevil or the Devil of Hell's Kitchen is a costumed vigilante fighting crime in the streets of NYC and in particular Hell's Kitchen. He's a battler that never quits, no matter how many times he's beaten down, he gets back up again smirking through the bruises and blood until he's won.

Description:

He's a lean, fit young man with dark, thick hair that's grown out a bit longer than you'd expect a man who often wears a suit to. He's almost perpetually sporting a bit of a shadow on his cheeks. His suit is unremarkable - inexpensive if well-tailored, in shades of gray. The only spot of colour on him are a pair of round, red-lensed glasses. He carries a white cane with a red tip.

History

History:

Growing up poor in Hell's Kitchen sucks. Growing up the son of a single father - a boxer, is even rougher, especially when one day, you're blinded by a chemical spill. It wasn't any easy childhood by any stretch, especially since his father kept fighting to support them, and young Matt struggled to contend with the heightened senses he found himself with after the chemical spill. One day, Matt overheard his father being offered a lot of money to throw a fight by local gangsters. Although he initially agreed, Jack didn't end up throwing the fight. He bid a large sum of money on himself with instructions that it go to his son. Jack was killed by the mobsters he betrayed.

When his mother failed to care for him, Matt was moved to St Agnes' orphanage. It was there he met a man named Stick, who seemed to intuitively know about the young man's enhanced abilities. Over several months, Stick put Matt through a harsh and rigorous training regimen that taught him to use his abilities to their fullest extent. When Matt tried to make an emotional connection with Stick (in the form of a bracelet he made from an ice cream wrapper) the man promptly abandoned him and disappeared.

Although abandoned and alone, Matt managed to keep pushing on. He was a bright young man who excelled despite his disability. He hid the fact that he could perceive the world better than any blind man. He finished school, entered pre-law, then law school. It was at Columbia that he met the man who would become his best friend and partner in business - Foggy Nelson. The two hit it off almost instantly and formed a strong and lasting friendship.

As interns, both Foggy and Matt worked at the large and prestigious firm, Landman and Zack. What the experience taught both of them is that they didn't want to be practicing the kind of law that defended large coroporations against powerless individuals. So, with some cajoling on Matt's part, they broke away to form their own firm - Nelson and Murdock.

Matt's vigilante career began the night after he and Foggy decided to form their own firm. He severely beat his neighbour after he escaped prosecution for abusing his daughter. That was the first mask, and the first step to taking the law into his own hands.

Since then, Matt's been making his presence known in his alterego, Daredevil. He's trying to get control of the crime in his neighbourhood. He balances his dual life as hard-luck lawyer by day, and the Devil of Hell's Kitchen by night.

Personality

Personality:

Matt Murdock is a conflicted man with demons closer to him than his devil-shaped suit. He is charming, vulnerable, wry and brave. He takes the weight of the world on his shoulders and has a hard time letting anyone else share the burden. He at once believes he's doing the right thing and questions himself at every turn. His Catholic conscience burns deep and bright, and occasionally wars with his analytical, legal mind. He cares too much about the little guy - the man with the bodega about to be torn down, or the old Russian grandma with asbestos in her walls. He cares too little sometimes about the street thugs whose noses he breaks for selling drugs. He's addicted to the fight, of being capable, because he must pretend not to be in his everyday life. If he was being honest with himself, he'd say he doesn't like being underestimated, but he recognizes its utility. All in all, Matt Murdock is a man who fights the good fight, even if he has to battle himself along the way.

Abilities

Meditation To Heal:
Between Matt's boxer-like tenacity and martial arts conditioning, he has also learned the art of meditation to speed healing. Some of it is simply mind-over-matter, where he convinces himself not to feel the pain associated with his injuries. Some of it however, is quite real. He can, with rest and focused meditation, heal approximately 20 to 30 percent faster than an ordinary human.

Radar Sense:
Matt has a true radar sense, a combination of enhanced touch and spatial awareness that allows him to perceive objects and people around him. The simplest application would be knowing where everyone and everything is in order to better move in space without the need of using sight, but such a sense can come in handy when predicting the trajectory of a moving object, such as a punch, or even where a teleporter may appear, by sensing the air shifting and slight change in atmospheric pressure.

Superhuman Agility:
Matt's enhanced senses and years of training has made him extremely agile, quick and able to react with lightning speed and precision. He can incorporate acrobatic moves into his fighting to dodge and best position himself for knock-out blows.

Superhuman Balance:
Matt has absolute perfect balance. This along with physical conditioning allows him increased agility and allowing him to make precise movements.

Superhuman Memory:
Actually one of the very few abilities that Matt had even before the accident, his encyclopedic memory allows him to store basically everything. That doesn't make him smart, even if he is, but remembering everything is pretty useful when being a lawyer, and being able to quote every single article of the US constitution is something he can do easily, just like remembering the voice of someone that he heard ten years ago on the bus, if he focuses he could perhaps even remember what that person was saying!

Superhuman Senses:

Matt may not be able to see, but all of his other senses are heightened to an extraordinary level. His sense of smell is so accute, that he can smell a man's cologne three floors away. His hearing is so precise that he can hear a bullet cutting the air or someone's heartbeat to tell if they're lying. His sense of taste is strong enough that he can eat ice cream and tell what dairy farms the milk came from. All of these super-enhanced senses combine to allow him to see the world in an unique - and in many ways superior -way.

Bilingual:
Matt speaks fluent Spanish. He also knows a lot of Latin because, well, lawyer.

Expert Marksman:
Something no one would expect out of a blind guy, Matt is an expert marksman, trained in the use of several projectile weapons from throwing knives to shurikens, but also firearms and archery, even if they're far from his weapons of choice.

Investigation:
Being a lawyer requires an analytical mind and an ability to draw logical connections. Matt has extended this into his nocturnal endeavors and uses his investigatory skills to help him track down gangsters and drug dealers.

Law Talkin' Guy:
Matt is a fully accredited lawyer. He graduated summa cum laude from Columbia. He could have gotten a job at nearly any of New York's top firms. Instead, he decided to strike out on his own. Nelson and Murdock might not be very large or have many billable hours, but their consciences are clear and the believe in what they're doing.

Master of Martial Arts:
Matt is an expert of several different forms of martial arts that he combines into a personal style. He is brutally efficient in a fight, able to react and counter ways even some of the finest fighters in the world would have trouble adjusting to. His weapon style of choice is with his billy club, but he's also very efficient at hand-to-hand or at using improvised weapons. He is also a brutally efficient boxer - a talent he inherited from his father.

Peak Physical Condition:

Matt is at the absolute peak of physical conditioning for a man of his age. He's been beaten around a lot (and that might cause him problems later in life) but for now, he's at the top of his game. There isn't an ounce of wasted fat or un-toned bit of muscle. He couldn't be in better shape even if he was an Olympic athlete with a professional trainer. His hero-ing makes sure he stays in shape.

Armoured Suit:
After Matt observed that one of his enemies had an armored suit that looked and felt almost like regular material, he convinced the man who made it to make him a suit of his own. Rather than mimicking the finest from Brooks Brothers, Matt's suit looks like a devil. It affords him a great deal of protection from weapons fire, melee strikes and the elements while not impeding his movements. His horned helmet protects his skull from concussion and other impacts.

Fogwell's Gym:
Matt is the owner of Fogwell's gym, a down on its luck boxing gym in Hell's Kitchen. Okay technically he owns the building, which he bought with the money inherited from Elektra Natchios. Originally Matt kept it all closed up to serve as a base of operations for the Defenders, but eventually opened Fogwell's doors again as a working boxing gym with programs for children. The rest of the building is still mostly vacant and Matt has set up a safehouse on the third floor for any Defender who needs it.

Nelson and Murdock:
Once a struggling law firm who's underprivileged clients paid mostly in pie and baked goods, though with the help of a fund set up by Elektra Natchios, their poorest clients bills are being paid, and the firm is finally in the black, enough to hire a few more interns and expand to the office space next door. In addition the firm also has a hand in running a law clinic in Mutant Town with Matt volunteering his time to see clients there, along with law students plucked from Columbia. How long will Nelson and Murdock stay successful, who knows, but for now it is doing well enough to keep Matt in decent income for a change.

The Defenders:
They're a team. sort of. Who watch each others' backs, sometimes? Maybe they're more like drinking buddies? Or maybe co-workers who occasionally help each other out? Either way, they are a resource.

Weaponry:

Matt's weapon of choice is a billy club that can be separated into two sticks with a long wire between the halves. It's a very versatile, and in his hands, brutal weapon.

Blind:
For all his superhuman gifts, Matt is still blind. He can't go to the theatre. He can't watch TV. He can't appreciate art. He also has to act like he has a harder time getting around in his daily life than he actually does.

Catholic Conscience:
Some people draw strength from religion. For Matt, for the most part it just causes him to beat himself up. He grapples with sin and damnation, between good and evil - and more specifically, where his place in the world is. He resigns himself to being a balancing force, but in his heart he knows he's a sinner. Sometimes he uses his faith to justify his actions, and other times his faith tortures him.

Collateral Damage:
If anyone finds out that Matt is Daredevil, there are people he cares about very much who will get hurt. Foggy, Karen, Claire - his clients who became his friends - they're all very potent targets. If someone were to hurt them, he may very well break his own 'no killing' rule.

Double Life:
Matt lives two lives - one, as mild-manner blind overachieving lawyer, Matt Murdock, and the other as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. The strain of hiding himself and the strain the split has on his psyche wears him down and stresses him out.

Enemies:
His secret identity might allow him to have a normal life if he doesn't put on the suit, but there's more than a few people gunning for the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. He's vulnerable when he patrols or engages, especially since some of his enemies are, or employ very powerful individuals.

Poor At Heart:
Matt grew up poor and that didn't change much when he opened Nelson and Murdock, where they sought justice over dollars (to the dismay of his partner Foggy Nelson). Now though the firm is in the black and Matt is making actual money, but it doesn't sit well with him and outside of some small indulgences most of it is reinvested in the firm or given away to charitable causes, leaving him able to pay his bills with a little extra left at the end of the month.

Sensory Overload:
One of the downsides of Matt's incredibly acute senses is that they can be overloaded. It takes a lot (he does live in New York City, after all) but if an enemy knew his weakness, they could use that against him. Sudden loud sounds, potent smells, that kind of thing, can all temporarily overload him and create a moment of vulnerability. Water in particular can really mess up his senses.

Thou Shall Not Kill:
Matt's willing to do a lot of things, but he's unwilling to kill. He'll maim someone for life, put them in a coma, break all their limbs - but he won't kill. That may make him vulnerable when killing someone is the best strategic move. He'll also let the bad guys live - potentially to fight another day and come after him for revenge.

Too Good At Law:

Standing up for the little guys may be the right thing to do, but it tends to put you on the radar of the big guys. He and Foggy are effective enough as lawyers that they can actually win, David-like against Goliath. That does not make them any friends.
