Born to an abusive and dysfunctional household, Nathaniel Carver's life has never been easy. It is made more complicated by the recent manifestation of a mutant power that allows him to see the past of people he touches. He's searching for a way to control his ability, as it's left a trail of broken relationships behind him.

Description:

A lanky young teenager of lithe proportions and East Asian heritage, Nathaniel's most prominent feature is a stylized mess of snow-white hair. The rest of his face is delicately set: a small, upturned nose, soft cheekbones, a modest mouth that is prone to easy smiles, and an expressive pair of dark eyes prone to ethereal glowing.

Clothing varies day-to-day, but he dresses like a teenager with a gravitation towards current style and trends and almost always has gloves on.

History

History:

Born in Texas to a Korean hairdresser and an American lawyer, Nathanial was an unexpected burden on his parents' lives. They had only recently met and were not together for long. Nathan was left with his mother, who became abusive as he reached preadolescence. He doesn't talk about it ever; the details aren't pleasant. He ran away a few times, eventually got in touch with the right people, and rediscovered his father. Frank Carver was a lawyer working in the Big Apple with a wife and kids and, more importantly, willing to take Nathaniel in.

Things started to look up even if he had to deal with a bunch of family members he didn't know he had. It fell apart sometime after his fifteenth birthday when he woke up one day with white hair and a cursed touch. He could suddenly see into people's pasts. That classmate told the whole school, the counselor never cared, and his father knew. About everything his mother did. Couple this with the discovery of a mutant child, and the Carver household is a very, very tense environment and actively seek help for their newest member.

Personality:

Nathaniel's a sarcastic but kind teenager. He aims to be loyal and exceedingly tolerant of others. You have to be when you can see their darkest moments with a touch. Judgement and self-righteousness have ruined his relationship with his father and best friend, so now he tries to be accepting, but it is still very much a work in progress rather than a trait. He's not afraid to man up and admit when he's wrong, though, even if it takes him a minute.

While he wears confidence like a second skin, there are cracks brought on by childhood trauma, and he has yet to come to terms with his mutation. He's alone because of it and views the world with a healthy dose of cynicism. Everyone's hiding something, after all.

Abilities

Psychometry:

Nathaniel has the mutant ability to psychically examine people with skin to skin contact. At a touch, he sees glimpses of past memories, emotional state, thoughts, etc. Longer exposure will initiate extensive searches, but he will experience full immersion beyond the subject's perspective and see memories far more clearly and in more detail than them. It also works on objects, with physical contact allowing him to pick up on psychic imprints, histories, events, and so forth, and even to connect with and examine large areas from a single point. Currently, he is incapable of mental manipulation or attack, but his probings are sufficiently advanced to stand a reasonable chance against even telepathic shields or illusions of the highest caliber.

While there is a mental connection triggered upon contact, Nathaniel's ability could more accurately be described as looking into the past rather than direct mind wandering. For instance, if he uses his power on a blind or unconscious individual, he would experience memories with full visual acuity and clarity. This is what enables him to bypass many of the traditional psychic defenses. (Consent-based ability)

Skills

Bilingual:
A product of a biracial couple, Nathaniel is fluent in English as well as Korean.

Investigation:
After the manifestation of his mutation, there was some talk of Nathaniel going into policing or detective work. He took some rudimentary investigation courses back home and has solid reasoning capabilities, but his power greatly enhances his skills in this field.

Nerd:
It's not something he advertises, but Nathaniel is a bit of a nerd. D&D, Magic the Gathering, Star Wars. All that sweet stuff. He keeps it lowkey since it clashes with the pretty boy image he cultivates, but it comes up every so often.

Streetwise:

Having been a runaway for more times than he'd care to admit, Nathaniel has on-hands experience with how life is on the streets. He knows how to get around, where's safe to go, and can be sneaky. He understands how the police and disreputable types operate and how to avoid them if necessary.

Xavier's:

Nathaniel is enrolled in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. He's one of the newer students, but it's a place to learn how to control his ability, a roof over his head, and a group of people that may be less inclined to judge him.

Weaknesses

Bad Home Life:
Nathaniel doesn't have a good home life. His relationship with his mother was toxic, and his father's complicity in her abuse has put a rift between them. This isn't a debilitating weakness, and Nathaniel isn't angsty about it, but for a teenager who's still figuring things out, not having any emotional support at home is significant.

Control:
Nathan currently has very little control over his abilities. He is vaguely aware that they work on objects too, but he must be able to concentrate on them to activate his postcognition. For people, it's automatic, but he isn't well-practiced enough to hone in on a specific event. It's just a flood of memories. With training, he could theoretically locate a single moment, but as of right now, he must sift through hundreds of flashbacks to find the right one.

Isolated:
Aptly named Hindsight by his friends, Nathaniel seems to pull the most negative parts of people's history; moments that they would go back and change if they could. This ability prevents him from being close to people and has ruined his relationships in the past. Everyone has skeletons in their closet, and Nathaniel can't help but look at them differently once he accidentally trips over the bones.

Touch Averse:

Nathaniel's mutation is always 'on'. If his skin touches another's, memories, emotions, thoughts will transfer. He wears gloves and avoids physical contact. It can be a pretty lonely existence, but a necessary one as experiencing the memories of others can be overwhelming and disorientating.
