Melinda May is a high level SHIELD agent with a decorated history. She is highly skilled though she prefers to avoid field work in favor of piloting The Bus. And whatever you do, don't call her The Cavalry.

Slightly taller than average, this woman's dark brown hair and fine features proclaim her asian heritage. Deep brown eyes watch everything intently and she rarely reacts to anything with more than a flat stare or briefly raised eyebrow.

Utilitarian black clothing covers her from the neck down, a protective leather-like vest on her torso over a snugly-fitted shirt with sleeves long enough to reach the knuckles of her hands, openings in the sleeves allowing her thumbs freedom of movement. The shoulder of each sleeve has a SHIELD insignia patch on it, and fitted black trousers with sturdy black boots complete the outfit.

History

Melinda May was raised in a family that was part of the US intelligence community, so when she completed her formal education, she was rather promptly scooped up by SHIELD. She has spent more than twenty five years with the agency, working her way up the ranks through hard work to where she is now, having earned a good number of truly solid allies -- and yes, friends -- along the way.

During those two decades plus, May has worked with just about every top SHIELD agent there is currently (and many non-SHIELD assets), has been instrumental in a number of world-changing events such as the rise and downfall of national governments, and after Bahrain split her time between piloting a desk and training the new recruit agents in hand to hand combat.

Now, her codename 'The Cavalry' along with her reputation is something edging toward legend amongst the younger agents.

Personality

May comes across as dour and humorless, sometimes even strict and harsh. This is heavily due to what happened in Bahrain, and her own fears of getting close to someone again and then losing them because of a similar traumatic event. Those who've known her for a while can likely recognize her ascerbic wit and dry humor when they manage to peek through, or when she goes even further into emotional lockdown to hold very unpleasant and unhelpful reactions at bay.

Buried underneath all of that, May is staunchly loyal to those she trusts and considers friends. Not that there are very many of them. But, for those few people she trusts enough to let them see past her Vulcan-esque mask, she would go through the hell of Bahrain all over again to protect them from the regrets she will carry for the rest of her life.

ASIAN POLYGLOT
There are other agents that can speak literally tens of languages, but not many of them are field agents. While there are other field agents who are fluent in multiple romance languages, or European languages, May is a bit unusual in that she focused on learning and mastering several Asian languages. She is fluent in two dialects of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Cambodian, conversant in Korean and Thai, and if pressured, could probably passably cuss someone out in Malay or Tagalog.

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
After twenty plus years of martial arts training, nearly the same amount of field combat experience, and more life or death situations than she can accurately recall, May has become particularly adept at being aware of her surroundings. Every room she enters gets a very quick but thorough glance to place potential hiding spots, exits, and so on. She is also alert to every movement of any potential antagonists, making it seem like she anticipates their actions.

TACTICIAN

Over the span of her career, May has learned to lead small squads of agents and tactical combat teams, and can plan their missions more than adequately. She's nowhere near the best tactician in SHIELD currently, but she can do what needs to be done when it needs to be done.

IMPROVISATIONAL WEAPONRY
Getting stuck in a dangerous situation with no proper weapons has taught May to be ... versatile. She's learned to turn just about any random innocuous object into a potental weapon. Like appliance power cords. Or bags of flour. Or an office stapler.

MARTIAL ARTIST
Over the course of May's career, she has learned and gained competency in more than a dozen different martial arts forms, though is truly a master at only two: Aikido and Tai Chi. However, she's at least dabbled in almost every form that's out there, including (especially) the ones that employ melee combat weapons. She's particularly adept with soft weapons like chain darts and similar.

PILOT
May maintains SHIELD certifications to fly every type of air vehicle employed by the agency. This includes everything from the Bus to tiny, light, and fast two-person helicopters. Her particular specialties are fixed-wing VTOL types, like quinjets.

SMALL FIREARMS

While she is by no means a crack shot, May is proficient with just about every hand-held firearm made and maintains her SHIELD certification within the top ten percent of the agency's accuracy rankings.

Agent May has access to a wide range of resources through SHIELD, including surveillance, intel, weaponry, vehicles, and personnel. Now, she can't just demand any of these things without all of the requisite paperwork, but if their use is justified and approved, she could have quite a variety of resources at her disposal.

AGING OUT
Let's face it. Agent May isn't in her twenties anymore. While she's still one of SHIELD's top field agents and pilots, she's starting to notice that her reaction times are not //quite// as fast as they used to be. It's going to happen sooner or later. She'll be too old to keep up with the young kids anymore. She's NOT looking forward to it.

BAHRAIN
Simply put, May is compromised. She was thrown into a situation where she was forced to take the life of a child with the power to manipulate minds in order to save her own life and the lives of no less than a dozen other SHIELD agents. Since then, she's lost the previous spark of humor that lived behind her serious demeanor, and any missions that involve children have the potential to truly affect her ability to remain objective.

BEING HUMAN

This day and age is seeing more and more people with powers out there. May is, and always will be just a regular human. That's putting her an increasing disadvantage -- one she can't really overcome with skill and experience.
