As the daughter of David Cain and Lady Shiva, Cassandra Cain stood to inherit an unsurpassed mastery of the martial and assassination arts. Raised in absolute silence and constant, brutal combat training, Cassie's brain has been optimized to read bodies in lieu of understanding spoken or written language.

Intended to be the perfect killer, Cassandra's first experience in taking life left her mortified and determined to prevent killing however she may. She has since joined the Bat-Family as a caped vigilante, first as Batgirl and now as the faceless Orphan.

Description:

Cassandra Cain is a slim, highly athletic young woman of indeterminate Asian descent, 5'5 and either in her late teens or early twenties. Her body is covered in a variety of long-faded scars from myriad insults, though luck has conspired to leave her face intact. So quiet so as to be considered mute, Cassandra's hardly reticent - while it's hard to put one's finger on it, this silent youth has a particular emotive magnetism to her poise and posture. Those with highly analytical minds might capture the truth behind the mysterious intrigue; Cassie speaks with her body, every movement equally as purpose-driven as it is communicative in nature. Her posture is a statement of mindset, her every twitch and shift an utterance or interruption, and she lacks the traditional 'tells' in reacting to spoken word. Either that, or she simply doesn't understand.

Beyond this important distinction, Cassie would otherwise be considered fetching for her shoulder-length inky black hair and almond-tilted brown eyes. She doesn't quite dress to demonstrate figure or finesse, but rather wears functional clothing. Today's outfit is a trim black undershirt, along with a pair of black sweatpants bound up above a pair of training sneakers.

History

History:
One of the world's greatest assassins, David Cain was intrigued when he encountered a developmental neurologist claiming that the body spoke a type of language. A mind raised without conventional language would adapt to speak through physicality, the two theorized. The neurologist assumed it was scholarly banter. Cain went on to experiment in raising the world's greatest killer. Children died in soundless torture, driven mad by isolation in the name of 'science'. The children clearly weren't strong enough.

David Cain found hope in famed martial artist Sandra Wu-San, internationally revered for her almost prescient martial arts abilities. Despite this, Cain killed Wu-San's sister in an ambush and spared Sandra from the same fate - in exchange, Sandra would supply David a child. Cassandra Cain came into David's care the day Sandra delivered. Sandra would walk out of Cassandra's life never knowing her daughter, and go on to become Lady Shiva.

Cassandra was David's perfect child, predisposed to the kind of mental development his experiment demanded. Cain raised Cassandra in absolute silence, in a facility without words written or spoken. Every interaction was purely physical, every encounter meant to engage her perception and awareness. David Cain showed his daughter no love, and trained her from birth in what fighting styles and assassination methods he knew. Childhood 'games' taught her to kill, and Cain taught her never to trust. Cain beat, stabbed, shot, and otherwise maimed Cassandra to teach her to control her body and to live in constant vigilance.

Cass' torturous 'training' made her into an incredible little soldier. At seven, she was able to dismantle handfuls of men at a time. Elite martial artists would fight her and find their styles stolen from them in minutes, find their movements read as easily as one reads a book. His daughter turned out to be a human lie detector, a preternaturally gifted martial artist, fluent in the language of bodies and intentions.

The result was a child with no concept of language and no ability to express herself conventionally. Her brain's critical period for language development had passed, and the additional grey matter co-opted into David's experiment. She had never laughed and likely never would. She'd never be able to tell stories or understand others. In a very real, very crippling way, Cassandra was broken.

History2:

One thing she *could* do was read the absolute fear in the face of the first man she'd killed for David Cain. A 'game', as they'd come to play it - open the throat as quick as you can. A rake of the fingers across the neck. An 8-year old Cassandra had never done it in real life, and watching the life leave a man's eyes subverted the amusement of the game. It was traumatizing, and the reality of her actions set in on Cassandra faster than most - reading his body lent her awareness of his pain and panic in his final moments. Disgusted with herself, Cassandra ran away that day.

She spent several years on the lam, and with David's exhaustive drills in stealth and hiding Cassandra was skilled enough that even he couldn't find her. It was only in Gotham that coincidence transpired and she was recruited by Oracle after saving Commissioner Gordon's life. Since then, Cassandra has become an acquaintance of the Bat Family, and her tremendous physical potentials further honed through training in the non-lethal attack styles of Bruce Wayne. She would eventually become Batgirl and a part of Wayne's crime-fighting Bat-Family. They would teach her the rudiments of sign language and become a home she'd never had.

Still, Cassandra had never quite forgiven herself for murdering a man in her childhood, and has since vowed to stop death wherever she may - and die trying. As Batgirl, her constant patrolling and endless drive to work caused some level of concern in Wayne and his clan - it was obvious she was running from something. Her emotions ran high enough to be a liability, and her patrolling so reckless that Wayne asked her to take a backseat to the Batgirl mantle.

Since, Cassandra has been encouraged to find herself before returning to the Bat, her story untold but her death-wish apparent. As the masked vigilante Orphan, she left Gotham for a time to pursue her redemption on her own terms.

Personality

Personality:

Cassandra has been raised on an island in every sense but literally. Central to her character is an understanding of how pervasive her lack of linguistic development is - she does not have an internal monologue, she does not get to narrate her meditation or apply abstract logic to a particular problem. This doesn't mean she's a feral creature, but it does lend a certain sense of primalism to her manner and style.

She speaks physically. Through movement and dance, through combat and pain. It is for this reason that she abhors killing and can never forgive herself for what she's done - the sight of the life leaving a man's face haunts her in her quiet hours and drives her in all others. Unable to communicate or understand the sympathy of a peer, Cassandra has no outlet for her guilt and is consumed with a drive to repent - to stop others from killing with her every waking breath, and to eventually die in the trying. Her life for the one she stole.

While Cassandra was raised in isolation and really only understands violence, she has come to enjoy her time with the Bat-Family. While she still prefers a healthy amount of distance from others, Cassandra is keenly aware of the power of touch in conveying an attitude and doesn't have the same reservations as others about casual, socially physical contact. She is in the process of learning sign-language, though this progress is enormously limited by her basic failures to process the notion of abstract communication.

She wants to be understood, but nobody listens when she speaks, and they keep getting broken when she shouts.

Abilities

Lie Detector:
Cassandra can tell with near-faultless accuracy if somebody is attempting to lie while they are speaking, in reading the tells of their body, tone, and facial expressions. She requires close vision of a target's uncovered face to be able to do this. In understanding body movement like others might faces, Cassandra can generally ignore a disguise if she's paying enough attention to person wearing it.

Meditation & Chi:
Cassandra has enough control of her body to force herself into a near-comatose state to emphasize healing and recovery. She can greatly increase her rate of natural recovery by sleeping for prolonged (20hr) periods of time. Her knowledge of a body's energy has allowed her to temporarily pause a man's heartbeat by striking his heart - and then striking it again to resume. These abilities take focus to perform and are not so well-rehearsed as to see fluid use in a fistfight.

Optimized Human:
There's human limits, and then there's the true limit of a brain customized for violence. Cassandra Cain's entire life has been spent in the pursuit of martial mastery. Compared to world athletes of her size and stature, Cassandra hits just a little harder, moves just a little faster, and reacts just a little more fluidly. She isn't just representative of peak human ability - she represents what humans COULD be if every neuron in their brain worked towards physical perfection.

Pain Control:
Through childhood games and intensive training, Cassandra has a astounding level of control over her body's reflexes and can shrug off even the most severe pain. While this does nothing to address the damage incurred by an attack, Cassandra generally does not flinch unless incoming damage is enough to knock her out.

Poison Resistance:
Through her mastery of her body processes, if Cassie is aware that she is poisoned quickly enough after the initial exposure, she can focus and 'burn' through the deadliest effects of the toxin. This is typically an exhausting effort and will require Cassandra recover for a day.

Prodigy:
In being as tuned to physicality as she is, Cassandra can learn and master most forms of physical communication in breathtakingly short periods of time. Batman taught her stick fighting in five minutes. She has co-opted unfamiliar fighting techniques seconds after having them performed on her.

Cassandra is one of the pre-eminent maritial artists in the world owing to her incredible instincts and physical processing. She is potentially surpassed only by the likes of Richard Dragon and Lady Shiva so far as natural human ability is concerned. She has exploded punching bags and broken quality swords with a handthrust.

Pure Instinct:

Cassandra responds to stimuli in a fraction of the time other humans might - she interprets the way a given body moves, and as such is responding to it often before she or her opponent may understand what's going on. This ability to 'read' the opponent is what powers much of her awe-inspiring combat prowess, and lends itself to practically any encounter involving fast-twitch muscles.

With her instinctive level of processing, Cassandra has been able to dodge multiple bullets fired at her, snatch shurikens out of the air before they hit her, and single-handedly take on entire rooms full of skilled combatants. She is able to engage in combat with lower-end speed-enhanced metahumans without any considerable disadvantage.

This ability relies on her opponents exhibiting ordered movement and thought patterns. It is rare, but some individuals are so deranged and out-of-sync that she's unable to determine their next moves. The Joker is the most notable example of this special category of opponent.

Asl:
With her considerable dependence upon physical actions for communication, American Sign Language struck the Bat-Family as Cassandra's shortest bridge to communication. She has had tremendous trouble grasping the concepts of abstract communication, but has over the years come to 'speak' in basic gestures and concepts. In her time away from Gotham, Cassandra's skills in ASL have dwindled, but she maintains the very basics.

Assassination Arts:
Cassandra has been trained by her father David Cain in just about every known killing art there is. Bare-handed, equipped, or improvising, the language of death is Cassie's mother tongue and her natural instinct in practically every combat encounter she experiences.

Martial Arts:
Trained in the myriad combat arts that comprise Batman's highly-effective non-lethal style, Cassandra has exquisite knowledge on ways to bruise, break, disarm, and dismantle just about every combatant she encounters. Cassie's deep understanding of body mechanics in combination with her training at Bruce Wayne's hands has made her one of the world's truly peerless martial artists.

Nerve Strikes:
Her knowledge of a body's language and manner mean that Cassandra has an excellent working knowledge of where to touch to shut a person down. With focus and precise aim, Cassie has knocked out friend and foe with the touch to a shoulder or the base of the neck. She is able to deaden limbs with varying degrees of effect, as well. The effects from a nerve strike are temporary - in the case of being knocked out, victims typically recover after ten minutes.

Parkour:
Cassandra is quite proficient at 'Rooftop Running', getting around the enviornment, climbing, and manuevering and, as a highly trained martial artist, she has exceptional balance. There are certainly people in the world more skilled than her at it, but she's good enough at it that it doesn't slow her down in chasing someone over rooftops, or getting to where she needs to go.

She is especially adept at utilizing her grappling hook to make the most of her speed and transition from one area to another if it may seem inaccessible or take longer to reach through jumping/climbing and keeping a steady pace throughout her movements.

Pickpocket:
In keeping with her abilities at stealth and her time wandering the streets, Cassandra's a deft hand at taking things from a person without them knowing. She's no career pickpocket, but she's a natural in understanding times when a mark might just be distracted enough.

Security:
As a perfect assassin, Cassandra was trained in the art of breaching a perimeter. Her skills to shadow guardsmen, identify ingresses, and repeat security protocols were honed until David Cain was convinced no building could prevent his daughter from entering.

Stealth:

David Cain's torturous lessons included primers on the art of not being seen. While Cassandra owes plenty of her success to her preternatural awareness, the notion of hiding is well-practiced in its own regard. Cassandra knows how to make the shadows a second skin, and what the whites of a man's eyes mean.

Bat Family:
Cassandra is a member of the Bat-Family, as important to them as they are to her. While the legendary Batman serves as her idol, mentor, and strongest ally, any member of the Bat's adopted family is an incredible and more than willing teammate in whatever conflict Cassandra faces. As with everything in Cassandra's life, the trick is in explaining what she needs in the first place... or in getting her to understand that she's needed somewhere.

Bat-Gear:
Cassandra's utility belt carries the full assortment of standard Bat-gear. The iconic batarangs are there in bladed and blunt variety, along with a variety of smoke pellets, explosive gels, interfacers, and that ubiquitous Grapnel Gun. The problem is that Cassandra doesn't really use anything the way she's supposed to, and hasn't read the instruction manuals for obvious reasons.

Batcave:
Cassandra has access to the Batcave, one of the most advanced crime-fighting hideaways in the world. With the powerful Batcomputer at her fingertips, Cassandra can accomplish virtually nothing because she can't read. Seriously though, the arsenal and training facilities there are hers to use as she sees fit.

Batcycle:
In her time as Batgirl, Cassandra heavily utilized the Batcycle. The bike is capable of astounding speeds when boosted, is armored, and has reinforced tires that can withstand some substantial damage including self-repair from a bullet or two. Designed to capitalize on Cassandra's response time, the bike's maneuverability is emphasized above all else. While this belongs to Batman and Batgirl, Orphan can probably still ask to borrow it if she needs it.

Costume:

As Orphan, Cassandra is provided with a light armor costume that allows for absolute mobility along with maxium protection. Her suit can repel bullets, and give some protection against fire, severe cold, and physical damage (including piercing damage). The cowl provides a communications system.

Weaknesses

Alingual:
Failure to develop language is far more pervasive than merely being mute or deaf. The notion of written word and its abstract interpretation is utterly lost on Cassandra. While symbolism is critical to her, and the notion of concept and higher thinking are very much key to her movement and personal narrative, there is *nothing* framing her logic beyond symbolism and movement. Cassandra does not talk to herself. For this reason attempts at educating her in communication are all doomed to fail - she may get the simplest of terms and ideas, and may even come to express them herself, but her brain is fundamentally unable to process language.

Essentially, Cassandra listening to a person talk is very similar to how we might feel l istening to a pair of dogs barking at each other. Or reading signs written in bark. Or reading books written in bark. Or watching dogs bark at a dog soapopera, and maybe get teary eyes because of some of the barking.

This is a *crippling* weakness. Cassandra will never be able to take on The Riddler, as she'd fail the very first question-on-a-card he offers.

Were this weakness to be corrected, Cassandra would lose all of her abilities related to body-perception, as a condition of this strength is that her brain reorient its language-processing centers to that ability.

Death Wish:
Having killed a man, Cassandra experienced a sympathetic pain so complete that she cannot reconcile it with who she is or what she does. Unable to speak to others, unable to express her extraordinary sorrow and self-loathing, Cassandra never got the message about forgiveness or redemption -- she is very much forced to contend with her negativity on her own, unable to read a manual or self-help book.

Her answer is to spend her life preventing death where she may. Her manner is driven to the point of recklessness, her zeal for crimefighting on a level that would bewilder and concern her friends. It is for this predisposition that Batman asked Cassandra to step down as Batgirl and to 'find herself', as he put it. Currently, Cassandra has no answers to this self-inflicted geas. She will fight against senseless killing until she herself dies in the effort.

Family:
Cassie's father is David Cain, one of the most lethal assassins in the world. Her mother is Lady Shiva, the world's pre-eminent martial arts assassin. Her inheritance is blood, her predisposition is murder, and it is only through her own morality that she battles this natural incliniation. She has thus far managed to remain hidden from her parents' eyes, but should they find her they will stop at nothing to continue developing her as the perfect killing machine.

Just Human:
Cassandra, like the rest of the Bat Family, is merely mortal. This means, ultimately, knives cut, bullets either severely wound or kill. Bones break. And, in any injury, there will need to be a healing regiment, and physical training to get back to her prior condition - and some injuries might ultimately incapacitate her from ever being Orphan again.

Murderphobia:
'Terror. Then... nothing.'

Cassandra has never spoken to another human being in her life and instead communicates through sight and touch, through interpretation and observation. In a way no other human has before, Cassandra listened to a man die as his body told the story. 'Terror. Then... nothing.' The sheer oblivion of this act and the guilt associated with being the one to execute it means that Cassandra has spent her life fighting death wherever she finds it. She abhors the notion of inflicting that on another human, and is borderline suicidal in her self-loathing as a murderess.

She is constantly struggling with her instincts to kill her opponents, and goes to painstaking extremes to make a given fight as non-lethal as possible. Disarmament is a priority, the possibility of lethal force is a distraction.

If Cassandra believes she has killed again, even accidentally, there's no telling what she may do.

Naive:

While Cassandra is 'perfect' in fights, virtually peerless in an even match, she's never been able to benefit from a traditional teacher. Her knowledge of her opponents is limited to what she sees in their movements and facial expressions - she doesn't get to read up on their styles beforehand, doesn't get to talk to Batman about Two-Face's obsession with duality. The truly abstract techniques and knowledges Cassandra acquires are limited wholly to those she learns through her own physical education.

This is a nuanced, subtle weakness, but it is also the primary reason that Cassie occasionally runs into difficulty outside of a one-on-one sparring match. While the majority of tricks will have subtle, bodily tells - a hidden gun tends to affect a man's gait, for example - some of the oldest tricks in the book might just take her completely by surprise.
